Hi all,
I want to ask people of what they think of Electric Scooters from Scooteretti or Electric Scooters in general.
I'm thinking of going for one as it would be far cheaper than a car and would be perfect to commute to work with.
From Scooteretti's site - no insurance and no license would be required to ride their scooters.
On Scooteretti's site - they mentioned that in a lot of municipalities - one would not have to pay for parking as it would be viewed as a bicycle... so.. anywhere you can park your bike.. you can park this Scooter. Is the City of Ottawa one such municipality that allows that? I can't find it on their site.
Thanks in advance for any insights, comments and answers.

You are talking about an electric scooter and not an electric bike correct?
If that is the case then I would check the MTO website and get details on this, I think the fact is that e-scooters would be treated the same as regular scooters (based on cc's) and would require a licence and plate. If you are talking about those dinky little e-bikes that also have pedals do not require a licence.

Electric and Motorized Scooters (Go-peds)
Cannot be operated on roads in Ontario.
While these devices appear to fall within the definition of a motor vehicle under Ontario's HTA, they do not meet the provincial equipment safety standards for on-road use. As such, these devices may only be operated where Ontario's HTA does not apply, such as on private property.
Anyone using a go-ped should contact their local municipalities for by-laws pertaining to their use on sidewalks or bike paths.

Hi there,
We thought we would take the opportunity to clarify a few of the comments made. All of our scooters in our shop are classified in Canada as "Power Assisted Bicycles" per federal regulations. Each province can amend these regulations by adding additional restrictions to the Federal definition.
In Ottawa you are permitted to travel with your electric scooter "Power Assisted Bicycle, E-Bike, E-scooter etc..." anywhere where a bicycle can go (roadways and multi-use pathways). You are also entitled to park you electric scooter for free in municipal parking lots and sidewalks. Please note that the same rules apply to these products as a bicycle and you need to ensure that you do not block areas such as emergency exits, bus stops and the like. You are also allowed to lock up your scooter to any bike rack, locking poles etc...... For additional information, please contact City Hall and ask for the bylaw department for additional details.
In order to identify if an electric scooter is classified as a "Power Assisted Bicycle" it must have a permanently affixed label by the manufacturer stating in both official languages that the vehicle conforms to the federal definition of a power-assisted bicycle. For the full definition, please see subsection 2(1) of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
So in short these scooters are 100% legal and will become a larger part of our society in the coming years. Unfortunately educating the general public from a federal, provincial and municipal government level at the present time is minimal.
