View Full Version : M. Night Shyamalan....and Will Smith?

Apparently, M. Night Shyamalan was able to convince someone to give him money to make another movie. And even more surprising, he somehow tricked Will Smith and his son Jaden to star in it!!! Seriously, I am utterly confused now. How is it this guy able to make bomb after bomb and still secure funding and distribution for big-budget films? How many chances does one guy get?

I think people are still hoping that he will catch lightning in a bottle again like hes done before. Personally ive liked most of his movies, didnt really like lady in the water though or his newest freakshow one.

I personally like his movies as well. I dont really consider his movies a bomb other than Airbender due to bad reviews, but even that movie has made alot of money even covering the high production costs.

His movies are always interesting with a twist in the end, not like other movies where we know what will happen.

Apparently, alot of stars loved to work with him and many would want to if they were given the chance. For him to do another movie or 5 more, I dont mind and will probably check them out.

Jaden Smith = instant no watch for me. That kid doesn't deserve to be where he is now.

I was thinking along similar lines when I saw the thread title. The Sixth Sense was a great movie, but it's been a downward spiral ever since. At least the movies keep him from becoming a doctor like his parents wanted. He'd be killing people rather than studio profits then

The issue with his twists are they are usually so far out there they make no sense. A movie doesn't need a twist ending to be good, and the fact is, you always know there will be some ridiculous twist at the end.

It's gotten to the point where the biggest twist ending he could put into a movie is no twist ending.

Think about it.

I haven't watched his movie for a while... Maybe he's due to make a good one.

I really liked Sixth Sense, but it's not the kind of movie you watch over and over.

I thought 'Signs' were pretty boring and with no surprising twist.

'Unbreakable' was just a dumb movie - The plot was not convincing to me at all. I haven't watched any of his movies since then.

He's better than his sister, Willow!
Jaden doesn't bother me; Pursuit of Happyness and Karate Kid were both decent flicks.

Sixth Sense and Signs were pretty damn good. Very suspenseful movies.

Unbreakable is still one of my all time favorites. A real discovery story, and total gut punch at the end when you realize Samuel L Jackson is the bad guy...

The movie centres on a boy struggling to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes on an abandoned Earth a thousand years in the future.

Apocalyptic 1000 year future abondoned earth??? Count me in...

Will's doing it to help launch his kid's career. The karate kid he and his wife were executive producers or some behind the scene roles. I bet will smith took a hefty pay-cut to get his kid onto the screen.

6th Sense, Signs, and Unbreakable were good. Downhill since then. I keep wondering if the next movie will be his last chance.

Some comments on this thread make me realize why Shyamalan is not going away. It seems people always point to his first couple works (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs) and keep thinking, he's bound to regain his form and he's just had a string of bad luck. Although I don't think his career can sink as low as the Last Airbender, the Happening, and the LAdy in the Water (all horrifically terribly movies), the man is not coming back.

Just look at people like Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. These people peaked early in their careers and never regained their forms

+1 I liked those three movies, everything after that was , he seems to try to be suspenseful but it really just turns into wtf??? (like with The Happening) watched the entire movie without really knowing/caring what's going on. The Last Airbender was just brutal to watch, the effects were decent but the dialogue and story was just brutal, the dialogue was so slow and unnecessary sometimes. Then I realized the Avatar cartoon was just the same, so I guess The Last Airbender was made just like that therefore it's just for kids...

You forgot the Village! Also terrible. But I also enjoy his work. He tells a good story.

I unfortunately came across a spoiler for The Happening before I got the chance to sit down and watch it. I watched it to shortly after the train stopped, then went to get a drink. At that point I caught the first breaking news about the Japanese earthquake and I've not gone back since. After such a horribly real-life disaster I think I've lost my attraction to Hollywiid disaster flicks. Wonder if Battle For Los Angeles' performance was affected at all? I didn't get around to watching that one.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure I fell asleep near the end, when they were hiding in the basement. I don't know if that was down to the movie or a hard day at work, but I don't think I ever saw the ending, or felt much need to do so. I've bought the BR of Sixth Sense though as I liked Bruce Willis and the kid in that one, and the twist at the end.

The cartoon is actually pretty good though. I never seen the movie though so I can't say anything about it.

You mean like "The Village" where you could figure out the ending way before it happened?;)

As other(s) have noted - Sixth Sense/Signs/Unbreakable - great movies.

The rest - meh.

The Happening (Mark Wahlberg) was pretty boring and stupid also.

Understatement of the year, this movie was ridiculously bad, and I actually don't mind Mark Wahlberg when hes not singing. The village was also another horribly bad movie. I actually liked Sixth Sense and Unbreakable was also quite good. Everything aside from those two has been pure crap.

The best part to any M. Night movies are the trailers. They are done so that the viewer is so intrigued by it, until you realize his name is on it.

I could see how that would be hard to remember.

It's the year of boring, generic, forgettable, one word movie names. Very few of them will be remembered in a year's time.

It's almost like the producers randomly opened a page in a dictionary, stuck a pin in a word, then developed a movie from there. Very strange.

Disagreed with 'Will Smith must have taken a pay cut to get his kid in'. People would BEG Will Smith to star in their movies, kid or no kid.

Agreed - M Night movies are so bad. I didnt even like 6th Sense, I think because it was hyped so much. I actually have pretty low standards in movies but if you over hype it its hard to not be disappointed.

The only movie of M. Night that I liked is the Sixth Sense but other than that, I don't know and I guess The Village is okay too, since I just can't believe that people can live like that without knowing the outside world. But let's see if he can do something different this time. :)

Independence Day 2 is finally in preproduction. Why did it take so long? Will Smith demanded $20million for that movie and the studios held out for this long and finally agreed.

Mr. Shyamlan allowing Will's kid into the set was likely a great incentive.

The Sixth Sense = Very Good
Unbreakable = Good
Signs = Very Good
The Village = Mediocre (figured out the ending very early on)
Lady in the Water = Horrible (first film of his that was really bad)
The Happening = Horrible (why did I watch this?)

Basically have stopped watching films that he is involved in. I gave "The Happening" a chance hoping he could capture some of what he was able to with his earlier films. That obviously did not happen.
