View Full Version : TV Cable companies "asking" CRTC to investigate/regulate Netflix

Wow - Rogers, Bell & Telus again in the news

Now seeing that UBB Internet is dead in Canada, and people are going to Netflix for $8/month these criminals are now complaining to CRTC to stop this practice (ie. cheap TV, no ads, watch when you want it). I am sure the reason is the loss of $$$ and instead of competing with Netflix they are running crying to CRTC (filled with former executives NOW acting in a position of conflict of interest). I think the people should ask an investigation into CRTC and the conflict of interest going on there.

Can we do something about it and support Netflix?

These companies are a bunch of thugs ganging up on the innovator of technology and services at low affordable prices, and we the people should support Netflix! What can we do?

PS. I have canceled my services with these, and moved to greener pastures supporting the smaller ISP an Netflix!

We need to hope someone comes up with a way to deliver Internet by near-earth satellite. Then we can get it from Google for free and bypass these mofos

So, is Google also leeching the infrastructure? Is YouTube leeching as well? WTF are you talking about?

Dina, are you suggesting CRTC regulate the internet?

If so, you are very, very ignorant of technology.

Bell = built the infrastructure with taxpeyer's money
Rogers/Telus = heavily subsidized by the government = the taxpeyers money

The monopoly and the backward thinking of these extinct dinosaurs needs to be broken. CRTC needs to be dissolved, and people working for Bell/Rogers need to stop the lip service. One day they will be out of work, like Dina.

what percentage of the newcomers/immigrants to this country watch cable vs netflix?
Most don't even know what netflix is. And they don't have rogers cable as its too much for them

Netflix is the welfare leech here.

And has made a fat profit from it already.

Sure would be nice if the CRTC did something to benefit the Canadian consumer. Give us something noone else has (but still wants). Instead, all they want to do is implement thought control, and keep us in the dark, but paying handsomely for this privilege.

Too much protectionism leads to this type of skewed thinking.

Netflix is the welfare leech here.

You're either a supporter of cronyism, or ignorant of technology.

Rogers, Bell and Telus gave us the dumb pipes through which services like Netflix can run through. They're not entitled to be the sole provider of all the entertainment content in every household.

In fact, separating the service provider from the content provider is great news for consumers, and the free market in general.

It's your type of thinking that kills innovation, and leads to the sort of price gouging we've been experiencing over the past decade.

A lot of people here already make great salaries to pay for these high priced services. That's why nothing's gonna happen.

From the comments section of that article

"These ISP's have the cujones of a couple of small planets. First they drive the locals into the ground by not paying them for content... and they run a campaign against them. Then once they have them on the ropes, they buy them and now they want to shut up any competition. It is time for the government to break up Rogers and Bell and Shaw. Too big and fat."

****, who can really blame them? If I was in their position I'd be doing the exact same thing, since I'm not in their position I want netflix to stay the way they are. They are not evil, they just do what is in their best interest just like everybody else.

You heard it here first folks. Every site on the internet not owned by Bell, Rogers, and Telus is nothing but a filthy welfare leech. We're all participating in sucking these fine upstanding companies dry this very second.

Thats fine, except they have the government in their pocket, inherently enslaving us to them.

So I suppose, you're right, the problem isnt with ROBELUS, its that the government lets them mind the store.

I just find it hilarious that instead of improving their product the big telecom companies try to coerce customers to stay with them. Bad business strategy 101.

It's funny how the incumbents never raised this much of a fuss with video rental places, isn't it? Netflix is basically the same thing, only online.

Because Netflix is pretty much all you can consume for $8. People start thinking about their TV bills and realizing that they can live without television services.
If I wasn't locked into a contract with Rogers for my cable I would definitely be cancelling the TV portion of my bill.

I would just stream everything throughout the house with wdtv devices. (the cost of cap overages would be factored in)

bell, rogers, et al got massive amounts of subsidization by the government when building the infrastructure

the government gets their money from the taxpayers

so really telecoms are the 'welfare leeches'
