You may want to start your research here:

As for what documents you'll need:

http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/application/applying_for_benefits.shtml#information

I find calling Service Canada and speaking to their agent very helpful in determining what you need to do. I suspect you'll need to apply for EI immediately after beng laid off, then at some point, you can start your maternity benefits.

Have a look at this:

http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/types/regular.shtml#types

"Can I receive regular benefits and other types of EI benefits (that is, maternity, parental, sickness, or compassionate care benefits) in the same benefit period?

Yes. You can receive up to 50 weeks of regular benefits combined with maternity, parental, sickness, or compassionate care benefits in the same benefit period. However, you cannot receive two types of benefits at the same time.

If you are in this situation and want to know more, please visit our Web site at www.servicecanada.gc.ca, call 1-800-206-7218 (TTY: 1-800-529-3742), or visit your local Service Canada Centre."

Your situation is unique so you should give them a call. Since you still got like 6+ months to go, I don't think you would qualify for pregnancy leave. So you would be getting EI for unemployment but I'm curious to know if you are required to seek employments in your situation. Let us know. Good luck.

You can go on EI for now, and it all depends on how many hours you banked prior to getting laid off. If you you banked enough hours, you should be able to switch from regular EI to Maternity Benefits. Just make sure you time it correctly --- and call/visit your service canada rep. to ensure you have your date(s) correct for filing all your paperwork.

Good luck!

Regarding the documents required, you just need to apply to EI (online or in person) and you need to have a Record of Employment (that's if your employer have not yet submitted it electronically).
