Awesome gift for a one year old boy?

My nephew's first birthday is in mid June. I need to get a gift that will be better than his other uncle and aunts :D

Cost isn't a huge deal, but $200 or under would be nice.

I'm just trying to think of something really fun that he would like. Was thinknig of one of those electric/battery powered cars. But i think that he might be too young to drive that anytime soon?

Would love to get ppl's thoughts.

Seriously, at 1 you're buying the present for the parents. Buy a small token gift and make a $200 RESP contribution for him.

Too young for that. Nowhere near the coordination to run it yet.
clothes, simple toys, etc would be my choice, or maybe a keepsake for when they are older...for instance, when my daughter turned 1 this year, I bought her an Olympic torch from VAN 2010 for her to have when she's older, and hopefully inspire her.

I don't disagree that diapers and RESP is a more practical gift........but as an uncle, its more of a want to just give him something that he can play with, etc.

But yeah I also get what you guys are saying about the cardboard box and stuff.........lol......out of all the toys he has, his favourite things to play with include:

- newspaper
- extension coards
- carbon monoxide detector
- Roomba

haha.

Perhaps I should wait to get him something more of value when he can appreciate the gift more. I actually thought I should build him some kinda fortress out of boxes/etc. to play in. Wouldn't be too expensive and he'd probably enjoy something like that a lot more.

I echo the sentiments from the other RFDers. Quite often what keeps a toddler amused for hours at a time is as simple as a cardboard box or the gift wrap paper. There won't be anything you can buy that will make a one-year-old go "wow... that's amazing... geez thanks you are my favourite uncle!!!" The attention span of a one-year-old is short and sweet.

If there's one thing I can suggest is instead of an expensive gift, dedicate your time regularly to play with and be with the child. You'll find that in the long run, the time spent with him will make him appreciate you more and over time, you will be the favourite uncle. That, in my opinion, is more than what money can buy!

Oh believe me, I do the hanging out with him already as much as possible. He's really been the greatest joy to our entire family over the last 10 months. We live very close to my sister's place so I get to see him pretty often.

As an uncle it just seems necessary to spoil the kid. But yeah I will try to think of something a little more practical since he won't even understand what's going on haha. Thanks everyone.

Kiddie pool sounds like a great idea! He has been going to swimming classes and loves going in the water. This will be a great gift idea for him to play with in the summer. Thanks :)
