Hi - my boys will likely be born in about 6 weeks and I need to think about cribs! Normally, I don't mind shopping around but now that I'm on restricted activity, I don't have that luxury! I was looking for a recommendation on where to get 2 cribs for a great price. My Mom checked out the Bay's baby furniture clearance today and out of 3 she visited, there was only 1 to be found.
Is it worth it to wait for the Sears baby days sale? Is Babies R Us a good option? What about Ikea? I am a bit hesitant to try indy shops now given the troubles I've read about here.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. I normally wouldn't be obsessed with finding a good deal but cripes, it's scary how much baby stuff (x2) costs!

I got my son's crib from baby cribs & more in mississauga, on dundas. it was about $220, it was decent. The more you buy from them, they usually give you a decent deal.

Ours is from IKEA.
It's almost 4 years old, survived 2 moves, including unscrewing and changing it to a lower platform baby bed then to a toddler bed and back to a crib again and it's still as good as the day we bought it.
I love the crib and would highly recommend it. It's an older version called the IKEA TASSA crib but they have other models that do the same thing.

It converts into a toddler bed.
It's a good size if you're considering getting 2 in terms of space and they're still long enough to accomodate a growing toddler (fyi - friend had her twins sleep in the same crib til they were older though if that helps!)

Another thing that I find a plus about them is that the side panels do not slide down. I am not a fan of cribs that do that for safety reasons.
It is really not that big of a deal to bend over and get your baby out without lowering the sides as there are 2 levels of the crib platform. One is higher for when your baby is little and then when they start to stand you can lower it.
Good luck! :)

^^^ The Ikea cribs had some safety issues too...

It's also worth noting that the whole recall on drop side rail cribs was due to dangers from improperly assembled cribs and cribs that have broken parts. The rail could get dislodged if it's assembled improperly or if the hinges were broken and the baby can get stuck. But a properly maintained drop side rail crib would never have that problem. It's really just stupid people that ruins it for the rest of us...

Consider wal mart in the states if its convenient to get across the border for you. They have a large selection of cribs and everything else baby related that you can get shipped for free to your nearest state side walmart using Site to Store. We got a bunch of baby stuff before our son was born, we ended up paying the PST/GST when reentering Canada, but still saved double the amount of what we ordered by buying it in the States. That included gas to get there which is not far for us, and we filled up on the way back since its so much cheaper there anyway. Ironically, we got our crib from Wal Mart in Canada, as they had a sale where it was 50% off and worked out cheaper than getting it in the states.
Our crib is a Storkcraft, it gets great reviews, is very sturdy, and looks great in baby's room, people constantly comment on how good it looks.

For each of our kids, we started with an Arm's Reach Co-sleeper attached to the bed for the first six months. We would recommend this for everyone. It is a far better way live through the first six months especially if you are a proponent of Attachment parenting (i.e. Dr. Sears). After that, we just have a very simple crib (stayed in our room until they were both two).

Just want to share my positive experience with Storkcraft. We noticed several little scratches and dents on the woods so we called Storkcraft and they sent us 2 out of the 4 boards, touch-up kits and accessories within 2 weeks. I am a little surprise because that is almost 40% of the crib (2 more boards + the baseboard would be a complete set).

We bought the Hensvik crib (http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/60077355) from IKEA for our son, and it was great. Only $199, sturdy and safe. And the Hensvik coordinating shelves and furniture looked great in the nursery. Converts to a toddler bed as well, though we skipped that function and moved on to a racecar bed recently.

Not sure if this is something you want to consider, but I know a family with twins that had only one crib. The boys were so used to being close together in utero that they slept best close together anyway. Might be something to think about ... at least at first.

+1. We've got this one now and it's been through a unscrewing to lower the platform and disassembly/reassembly for a move. No issues, fairly inexpensive.

We have the same one (I'm assuming you're talking about the StorkCraft Tuscany 4-in-1 Stages Crib), it's actually on sale right now at Walmart for $199 (until Thurs May 26th). I agree, it has awesome reviews, is quite solid and looks great. Worth the price IMO.
Also, just an FYI that Etobicoke Ikea will have the Leskvik Crib on for $80 (reg $180) as their Wacky Wednesday deal (on May 25th): http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/store/etobicoke/offers
Not sure about how this crib holds up..but several ppl on here seem to like the Ikea quality.

Yep, that's the one, was around $150-$160 when we picked it up at Wal Mart's anniversary sale last year which was a great price, it's rare to see baby stuff in Canada cheaper than the states lol

If you can afford it - I would try Naked Furniture. You can get good solid wood convertible cribs for a very good price. They come in quickly and you will have no safety issues as they deal with reputable companies.

Thanks for the tip! Need to pick up two cribs, at this price it's a great value.

My wife and I had a positive experience with a business based out of Oakville called Rooms to Grow. The woman sells baby furniture from her home (very very nice and a nice show room).
The cribs range from $299 to $550 and if you buy a set, you get a free mattress with a 10 year warranty.
good luck!

This is a great idea, spend as little as possible until you have to. Our first lived in the stroller bassinet for the first month, when we put him in the crib he was so small there was easily room for another (and they don't move much for a long time either). Now at 3 he is almost too long for the convertible crib.
