Velociraptor or SSD?

My OS/Game drive just died on Sunday and I'm looking at possible replacements.

Velociraptor, 640GB Black, or SSD?

Are SSDs worth it now?

For OS, go with a SSD. Makes the OS so much faster and responsive and boots much quicker. For games and data, it is still not economical for using SSD. Some games can take up around 20GB on their own so you would need a really expansive high capacity SSD if you want to use it for games/data usage. Best option it to use a SSD dedicated to OS/Apps and use WD Black drives for games/Data.

How much is 60GB in terms of real storage space? 54, 55GB? Sorry, haven't been paying attention to computer hardware lately.

Also, which 60-64GB SSDs would you recommend from this list? My budget would be as close to $100 as possible.

Kingston SSDNow V100 2.5in SATA II Solid State Drive, 64GB
Corsair Force Series Solid State Drive, 60GB
OCZ Vertex 2 E Series 2.5in SATA II Solid State Drive, 60GB

The corsair force offer 60 real gb, +-55gb once formated (the 5gb lost if for the ssd to manage itself).
The force is probably the best at this price.

You might also want to look at Crucial M4 SSD 64Gb

What's the difference between F60 and F60A? Can't seem to find much on the Net. MemoryXpress and NCIX sell two different revisions.

SSDs are great and all, but a real life velociraptor is too good an opportunity to pass up.

I have a velociraptor 600GB and it's a darn good drive, but it's speed just couldn't compare to a SSD. I think that 600GB cost the same as a 120GB now? So if you need the storage then the raptor is good. For gaming you can easily fill up 120GB.

F60 is 34nm and F60A is 25nm.

Hands down depending on what board you have a 60-120 gig SSD based on the sandforce 1xxx or 2xxx chip, combine it with a 1 tb+ WD Cavier black which you can partition into 2-3 parts for backup os install/game install/backups of important data.

Myself I get buy with a 60 that gives me around 55 gigs as my main which after the os & a few other apps gives me about 40 gig to do 1-2 game installs on that I will keep playing / or play till done.

My advice .... budget if you can about $300ish & grab a Corsair Force 3 120 or Vertex 3 120 + a 1 tb WD Cavier black Sata3 drive & call it a day. :)

Small SSD + big storage drive.

You get more storage for big files and way faster boot/load times. I seriously don't understand how Velo's even survive in this market...

I'm still running a Gigabyte P35-DS3L but may sell it in the next few weeks.

My biggest worry is seeing 300GB SSDs for the same price in 1 year. But that is the price of "upgrading".

well, it COULD occure but I don't think nand prices will hit the market that much more lower untill maybe past a year. thats why a 120 is the new amount that the 60's use to be.

Joking aside, an SSD is the obvious solution. An SSD trumps a HDD no matter how fast, at any test. The only downside is price/gb is a bit high, so just buy what fits your needs and use a HDD for storage. The new 60gb OCZ sandforce drives are out under the names Agility 3 and Solid 3 which should slowly push down the prices of the 2nd gen drives.
