For anyone considering Deal of the Day for Aubrey Meats ....I bought voucher when a similar offer was avail thru Dealfind (about a month ago) & was notified 2 days ago that due to a flood store has reduced refrigeration and temp limited product (full operation will resume by end of July).

Here's the email:

Hello Valued Dealfind Customer,
We are writing to notify you about a Deal you have recently purchased: $49 for $125 Worth of All Natural Beef, Ham, Sausages, Chicken and More from Aubrey's Meats – between May 6th – 9th.
Unfortunately, Aubrey's Meats experienced a flood in their store shortly after we featured them on our site.
As you can imagine, the flood caused loss of products, and it also damaged their refrigeration system.
Their refrigeration system will be fully operational by the end of July. Aubrey's Meats and Dealfind sincerely apologizes for any inconveniences this may have caused you.

We appreciate your understanding and patience.
If you have any comments and/or questions, please do contact us at support@dealfind.com.

Interesting.

From having worked there for 3 years as a teenager (a loooong time ago!), I can say that the majority of the cold storage space is in the basement of the store. Upstairs is a smaller walk-in cooler. So it is very plausible that they do have limited capacity for now.

The fact that they came out and addressed the issue on their website, coupled with the length of time they've been in business (over 100 years, albeit not the same owner now), wouldn't make me panic. I still have my vouchers, although my brother redeemed his already with no problems.

I have 2 vouchers, but they have a new deal up today or yesterday. This would be their 3rd or 4th deal, which makes me concerned they may be going the route of the butchers in Toronto, but who knows. I never got the email about this, I did get one a few weeks ago saying if you wanted meat from them you needed to order like 3 days in advance or something. I will need meat from the week after Canada Day, and if they can't provide, I'll be asking for a refund of both my vouchers.

My freezer is full so I've been waiting until I had room for stuff to go. My mom has a voucher and wanted to go this week. We received an email from kahoot shortly after buying the vouchers asking people to pre-order, but without other restrictions.

Didn't know they had another deal going. My understanding is that all the deals they've run have a limit of 1000...is this true?

I don't know about limits, but they have run at least 4 deals. The one I missed was $60 for $175 of meat I think. The one I got, and the one they are currently running is $50 for $110 of meat, and I am pretty sure they have run at least 1 or 2 other deals already.

I have 2 vouchers and my parents have 2 vouchers as well.

Why wait 6 weeks until the end of July? The website and the letter posted by the op don't say they are closed, just that the refrigeration system will be back to normal at the end of July. The flood was over a month ago.

May 9th we had a flood in the store. This has created a serious problem for us. We are operating with a third of our cold storage space. This has been under construction since May 12th. We are not able to order the amount of product to keep up with the demand. Right now we have to cap the orders based on the cold storage.

To the op, are they really closed? I don't see anywhere on the letter you posted or their website that says anything about having to close until the end of July.

My apologies ...they're not closed, just operating on limited capacity but have read on other sites that some ppl were already having problems with orders.

Decided not to go through the hassle. I live south of the city and don't want to waste time driving all the way down there for nothing.

I emailed kahoot yesterday requesting a refund and received a reply this morning. They said not a problem and my cc would be credited tomorrow.

Now what I am curious about, is when they have this low capacity, I wonder how they can afford to run another deal on dealfind today for $89 for $200 worth of meat?

I said the same thing about the butchers in Toronto. Looks like a Ponzi scheme, and these guys appear to be heading down the same path. I am going to try to get meat, giving them plenty of notice for the order, and if they fail I am asking for a refund.

It looks like Dealfind are deleting comments for this deal on their website. When someone asked about the email regarding the flood, "catherine" posted the problems are all fixed and they are good to go. Someone asked why didn't they send out another email to tell people everything was fixed and its gone now. Someone asked how they could have another deal when they were dealing with the flood damage and the answer was that the deal was already in their system. They did leave this one up;

I have bought multiple deals from Aubrey's and have been very very happy with them. I did not see anything get affected by the flood.
If you want to pickup in store (not pre-order), you can get about 50$ worth of stuff at one time (or less). If you pre-order by emailing them, you can order the full value of your voucher( or less).
There is nothing to be sorted out! I went the other day to pick things up in person. I'm not sure why there is so much misinformation. Everything is good :)

A few things don't add up here. The flood happened in May, and it was to be another 5 weeks according to the email before things were back to normal, but now all of a sudden everything is ok. So the work was finished 5 weeks early? The email they sent out, does it say they are closed? Does it say there are restrictions on the vouchers until the end of July? Or is it just a vague stay away note because they need an excuse to buy time? How could they run a deal for a business that had such a huge flood that it takes 3 months to recover and the answer is "it was in the system"? The flood was over a month ago, plenty of time to cancel this deal. If everything is good, then why do they need a shill?

Well,
I think for my orders, I am always going to call right before leaving my house just to be sure.
I have to take the bus there and with how much other things I have to do the last thing i want is to go and not have the items I want.

But I do suggest if you want a roasted chicken that you pre-order as they do not seem to make many of those at a time.
they are kind of expensive too- so not sure I will be getting too many of them either.

too bad they took the eggs out of the deal, I was told before with my earlier voucher I could get them.
guess I will just get the Backing's eggs at Cedar's grocery- they are cheaper there too by around $1 (and near my place too).

I went to redeem a voucher, and here is my personal experience with them. It was definitely positive (I am a little surprised myself), and I will definitely redeem my second voucher in the near future, and possibly buy into any more they run.

I went in Monday July 4th and asked them about the voucher. I did not have it on me, but I was just asking for information sake. They told me I could use the voucher for $50 worth of product without placing an order in advance, or I could place an order and get it all at once. I placed an order with them later that night to pick up some stuff Friday, July 8th. The next day I got an email from them confirming it would be ready. Friday morning I gave them a call before I went in, just to verify it was, infact, ready. They informed me it was. So I went in to pick it up. I got there, they got it from the back and rang it up. My own calculation of how much it should have cost based on their price list was $107.14 If I remember correctly. Price they charged was $108.50. I ended up not having to pay anything over my $110 voucher, and they informed me I had 50 cents left on it I could use later.

For the price, what I ordered was:
2lbs of Sirloin steak (Was some of the best steak I have had in a long time. I just BBQ'd it with steak spice)
2lbs of striploin steak (Was definitely good, but I personally preferred the sirloin. That is just preference though, also just BBQ with steak spice)
2lbs of Double Smoked Bacon (Ate one pound, and it was very delicious. Thick cut, and not overly salty tasting which is the case with a lot of bacon)
1lb of Lamb brochettes (I haven't cooked lamb, nor have I had it very much, so it is hard for me to comment other than it wasn't to my taste really)
1lb of Chicken skewers (Haven't eaten yet, have them frozen)

Overall, the quality of meat was definitely good, the price is a little high, but with the voucher, it balances out. I want to try some of their more exotic meats next time, like their bison, or deer, but that requires ordering a week in advance, so I shall see. But overall, positive experience and great quality. With all the deals they have run, I was expecting a big hassle like many had with the butchers in Toronto, but I was mistaken. Service was good, and the quality of meat was fantastic.

The chicken shishkabobs are still in the package in my freezer, I didn't eat those. The lamb I believe was either plain, or if seasoned it was very, very lightly so. The thing about the kabobs was I expected them on skewers, and they were not. It was basically just the cubed meat.

At least you are paying top dollar for the meat only, and not a bunch of onions and peppers that can be bought across the street at a fraction of the price. :)

I've already used 2 vouchers and only on rib steak. The quality of meat was excellent and the discounts brought the cost lower than the supermarket price. I'm very pleased.

I only eat chicken, turkey, bacon and fish.
The chicken breasts I got from Aubreys are very good- made chicken fingers with those!
The roasted chicken was great- lots of meat on that and huge- but almost $25:!: Odd thing was I expected a browned chicken as it was roasted and the outside of it was white, like it was steamed. The meat was very moist and it had herbs on the outside. Would get the roasted chicken again, just kind of odd that it is not browned??

I tried the bacon from Aubreys once and it was good, but would not buy some this year as they can not confirm to me what the ingredients in it are. I emailed them and they only told me someone makes the bacon for them and they would try to get the ingredients for me....the never followed up after that, even though I did contact them several times.
I'll just stick to buying the bacon from the source where I know the ingredients.

Seems everytime I turn around, the store came up with a new policy. Went in a couple days before Thanksgiving to pick up some meat, and they had the sign up only at the check out saying "no use of coupon a week leading into any holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas". So a note to those hoping to use coupon for Christmas. Went in again last week to pick up some meat, and was told the max. coupon use they would allow was $50, and I had to pay cash for the excess. I wasn't in the mood to argue, as I don't think any of these policies were written anywhere in the fine prints. Plus they owner recently passed away. Not sure if this has anything to do with it. So just lay it out here, so other might know to avoid any disappointment. Personally I will make one more trip to use up my balance on the coupon, and that's it.

I haven't been to their store lately, but I know the last few coupon deals I saw online had a $50 walk in limit.
Seems they just decided to apply that to all their coupon deals now- even if my vouchers say nothing about that.

If you want to go to Hull you can get Bison and even bison spring rolls (I tried them- they were good).

or in Dec there is the Holiday fair at the museum of Civilization and the Bison farmer should be there, along with many other food producers- I do not know the dates yet.

But it is the vendors from Marche Outaouais- you can see their pricing online.

Interestingly, Aubrey's appear to have had another flood following the latest Groupon offer. I received this email 10 days after placing my Christmas meat order:

"To our valued customer,
Due to a flood, we have been instructed by Health Canada to close until advised when to reopen. We experienced a flood in the basement of Aubrey’s, with a loss of $40,000 worth of product.

If you bought it through groupon and don't want to deal with that, you can likely ask for a refund, groupon is usually good about that.

I think at the very least, they should extend the expiration of people's vouchers. At the VERY LEAST, due to the fact that there have been at least 3 times when we should have been able to use them, and they were not allowing redemptions (The refridgeration issues, and now this). I like their bacon and their steaks personally, and find their bacon well worth it.

That being said, I think it is ******** that they cannot accept vouchers because they sold too many and cannot keep up with demand. Well no ****, they sold something like 35000 vouchers. But it isn't like they sold them all at once, they have been running these deals over the course of a number of months on various sites, they knew what the response was going to be like after the first few.

Well here is an interesting link to a deal gone wrong at a Butcher shop in Ottawa, google Aubrey's Butcher shop.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2012/01/19/ottawa-groupon-butcher-aubreys-meats.html

Anyone who has followed Coupon deals worldwide knows this story is all too common, the similarities between these two stories is uncanny, looks as though the Coupon companies once again made their money!! Small businesses are unable to meet the demand of bargain hungry coupon holder's. CBC article says:

The butcher shop said in the statement that when the former owner became ill a year ago, they discovered they had debt in excess of $300,000, about $100,000 of which was owed right away.

To bring in new customers and new revenue, management signed up with online coupon retailers to bring business in fast.

Ah, the old Hail Mary play, just as I pointed out at http://forums.redflagdeals.com/merged-butchers-aka-marlon-meats-organic-meat-feedback-discussion-999078/53/#post13025974 :

From http://techcrunch.com/2011/06/13/why-groupon-is-poised-for-collapse/ : (doesn't apply to Groupon only)

...
Groupon is not an Internet marketing business so much as it is the equivalent of a loan sharking business. The $21,000 that the business in this example gets for running a Groupon is essentially a very, very expensive loan. They get the cash up front, but pay for it with deep discounts over time.

...

How would you exploit an overpriced loan? Don’t pay it back.

Assume that you’re a business that is unscrupulous and you’re looking to make a quick buck. You could create a wildly generous deal that would sell like crazy. In about 30 days, you’ll have 2/3 of your share of the deal. Then you shut down operations.

It also works for businesses that are just having a tough time. As critical as I am of Groupon, the slam dunk case is to sign up with Groupon if you’re going bankrupt. I strongly encourage every business that is about to go under to call Groupon. (Don’t tell them Rocky sent you.) It makes total financial sense—as a Hail Mary play. If you’re lucky, the upfront cash will be enough to help you stay afloat. If not, well, you were already going out of business. It may be your best option.

... If 85% to 90% of their current customers are coupon holders, they have very few ways of making money so they're just hanging on for dear life until the next big loan payment comes due. Then it'll be bye-bye!

I am so glad I didn't purchase any type of group deal for Aubrey's Meats. I had a big suspicion something like this would happen when I saw their store pop up on every single group deal site known to man. It wasn't just a one time thing, they were posting deals for 2-3 months. It's BS to say they never expected this, they knew what they were doing. This is another Marlon Meats fiasco and I feel sorry for anyone who bought their coupons. Even though they've been open for so long, I hate to say it but I hope they lose a lot of business from this.

I bought 2 vouchers initially, and I was a little skeptical of it, due to the ongoing issue with the butchers in Toronto. But when I went in with my voucher the first time, they were friendly and there was no hassle. It was a good experience so I recommended the deal to everyone I knew. And now this happens. I had faith at first that this wasn't a scam and wasn't going to end the same way, but I have been proven wrong.

Since they had shut down accepting vouchers until May 1st, they have since began to accept them again, but now with some additional unacceptable conditions. As copied from their site:

-----------
Notice to all Aubrey’s Meats Inc. coupon holders:
This notification is meant to clarify the outstanding issue of coupons which were put on hold January 17th, 2012. It is the intent of the current owner of Aubreys, without legal obligation, to accommodate all of our past and present clients who bought coupons for purchases at Aubrey’s Meats Inc. between March 2011 and December 2011 in the following manner:
1. We will start redeeming coupons as of May 1st on Wednesdays and Thursdays only.
2. All purchases will be 1 for 1 with no exceptions. If you purchase $50 worth of product, $25.00 will be on your coupon and $25.00 will be paid in cash/ debit/credit card, up to $100 total per day.
3. All original coupons must be presented even if it was transferred to a gift card.
4. There will be absolutely NO cash refunds.
Thank you
----------------------

Needless to say, I have requested a refund from Kijiji for my 1 remaining voucher with them. These terms are a complete change of conditions. Now my $90 for $200 is basically $290 for $400, which went from a 55% discount to a 27.5% discount. Unacceptable. I hope I hear back soon from Kijiji.

Kahoot are usually jerks with giving any kind of refund.
That they are associated with some of the big advertising companies that publish tourism guides for Ottawa makes them look really bad.
I'm sure they have the money somewhere to give people back?

I spoke to some lady at Aubrey;s on the phone Thursday and she was kind of brusque on the phone and asked me if I called and emailed before?
I had never called Aubrey's about this deal (just to place orders before the holidays).

I was told that to use your voucher you can only pay 50% of your order with the Kahoot coupon and 50% has to be in cash.

I will try and use up one voucher I have that is partly used and am going to harass Kahoot into giving me a refund somehow.
And if they do not do so, I plan on posting my experiences on every place on the web possible like review sites, food forums I am a member of.

My parents went through koopon and don't have an answer yet.

maximem

I'm so confused by these new conditions. I have a partial voucher remaining and I'm not sure that it's worth using at all.

Let's say the voucher was 100$ for 200$. Means I would get 50% off the purchases.
If I now have to pay for 50% of the purchase, does that effectively work out to a simple 25% discount?
Ex.
100$ worth of product
50$ from voucher (I paid 25$ for that much)
50$ from cash
Means I'm paying 75$.

With Aubrey's prices being so over priced, this pretty much results in no value at all for me.

I'm also confused by this statement:
"It is the intent of the current owner of Aubreys, without legal obligation, to accommodate all of our past and present clients who bought coupons for purchases at Aubrey’s Meats Inc. between March 2011 and December 2011 in the following manner: "

Without legal obligation? I'm assuming that there was a change of ownership, and that the new owners are under the impression that the legal obligations of the previous owners don't apply to them. I'm not sure that's how business works? Don't you inherit all of the liabilities that already existed? Unless they changed the business name or something to get out of it - like Aubrey's Inc instead of Aubrey's Meats Inc?? Confusing.

Yes that is what happened. The equipment was sold to a new owner who kept the name (removed the " ' "), but its a new business there who is willing to accept the coupons on the new terms that won't lose them money.

I emailed Kijiji about my deal, and they said they cannot issue me a refund, but can give me a credit to my account instead. I think that is a pretty fair resolution and I am okay with that, so I accepted it. I too have a partially used voucher I will try to finish using (only $20 left on it.)

My parents went through koopon and don't have an answer yet.

Koopon sucks,
they would not even give me a credit for a $5 deal that was very bad.
-this was for Piccolo Grande on Mackay? st (store burned down...serves em right, lol).
<had very bad service there, they did not even give me all the items in my deal at the store, koopon's "resolution" ..."well this is a family owned business....." super lame>
--------------------------------

I did manage to get a $78 credit to my visa card for my Kahoot purchase a few days ago :)
I called and told my card dept that the store and coupon company have been jerking me around for almost a year and changing terms...that worked well.

Now I just have 2 vouchers of $55 each left- one is partly used (I will use that one up) and am trying to check my online banking to know what card I used (it is most likely scotia..but have probs viewing my bill online right now:(

-----------------------
From now on for my meats I will go to Bank st saussage for bacon and smoked chicken.
MRSO (outaouais food co-op) for organic bacon and fresh/frozen chicken (ferme Saveurs des monts...they have a actual store at their farm where you can buy chicken from the actual producer...and great chicken sausages).

Glebe meat market
Lansdowne farmers market
Ottawa organic market (saturdays on bank st).

Aubreys bacon is good, but the fact that they could not even tell me what ingredients are in it??
not so good as I have some food intolerances/allergies.
-also Aubreys does not even make their own bacon.

My parents still have no response from Koopon. I have received the full $89 in credit back from Kijiji, which I think is a pretty fair and reasonable resolution to the issue.

I still have like $20 left on a voucher for Aubrey's, which like I said, I will probably just use for bacon. I don't know what is in it or what they do but they claimed it was local, naturally double smoked, and preservative free, so unless they are lying, it shouldn't be too bad. It is the best bacon I've ever had to date though regardless. Mind you, once the rest of that voucher is done, I am not returning.

I have also heard Saslove's meat market on Wellington has good bacon (second to Aubrey's) & pot pies (Better than costco), but I have yet to try it. I will be sure to investigate.

Costco does not make their own pot pies- so anything is prob better than that.

I went to a butcher shop in Vanier and they had some locally made chicken pot pies that were frozen for a good price.
It was from Dumouchel. (was around $8 for a 12" or so pie..enough for 2 or 3 servings).

Also Ferme Saveurs des Monts is really good- but kinda expensive. I think I paid $14 for a 500 gram or so pie.
but the chicken was all white meat and they only use local produce. (theirs is frozen too).

Life of pie is supposed to be really good- but I walked into their shop and it was at least $20 for a frozen chicken pot pie- kind of a lot for me.

I also know Todrics sometimes has different frozen pies, but I have not tried them yet. Their frozen take home items are not that cheap (but their homemade jams and sauces are well priced).

*I really doubt I will be returning to Aubrey's after I use up what is left of my voucher.
The organic bacon from the food co-op is great and labeled with the ingredients.

and Bank st saussage makes their own product in store.
I don't eat that many of the meats Aubreys has right now and they do not have any actual prepared foods like pot pies, and do not have smoked chicken- while Bank st Saussage makes thgeir own and even has homemade chorizo, pepperetz pepperoni sticks homemade (and good- they are $2 for 2pc decent size).

Swiss pastries in Billings Bridge mall is also good for meats.
they happen to sell the smoked chicken from Bank st Saussage and the mall is open till 9pm (sausage shop closes early), they also usually carry their flavored bacons there too.

I'm not surprized about Koopon- they seem to be run by one person.
I've spoken to them twice last year and they were quite unhelpful.
they only have Ottawa deals sometimes and not deals for other places, so don't expect much from them.

ahoot went Kapoot

I am somewhat surprised as they are supposed to be owned by OttawaKiosk that promotes a lot of tourism and prints guides.

But then maybe enough people did call their credit card co to do chargebacks and Kahoot is no longer allowed to accept credit cards?? who knows.

or maybe they will reopen under another name....?

Well I just have 1 Kahoot coupon deal I did not redeem yet- it is for a yoga pass...maybe I better redeem that soon!

I doubt I'll be buying many of these group deals not- the whole thing seems to have jumped the shark and now everyone just sells made in China crap.

Yea, for the most part it is just crappy products online now where their value is inflated and then they give you a 'deal' which is basically higher than regular price should even be.

But there are still some good deals to be had, you just have to wade through a lot more crap to find it now.

This sucks! Kahoot just shut down operations. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/story/2012/06/02/ottawa-coupon-website-closes.html

Anyone been in there? Their website has not changed for the coupon restrictions, but has it in store?
