I have an old XBox 360 and I haven't touched it for a long time. A few month ago I was going to check if I can put XBR on it because the last time I check mine dashboard version is 2.0.7357.0.

Unfortunately, when I turned my XBox 360 on, it is F#@#$KING RROD! The picture below is my XBOX 360.
http://s92588927.onlinehome.us/images/ebay/XBox360.ROD.JPG

I found
1. The light on the power unit is orange, not green.
2. Most of the red ring of death on the Internet seems different from mine. Here is an example from others:
http://www.techdigest.tv/red_ring_death.jpg

I also called my local electronic repair store and they charge about $100 - $120 to fix ROD.
So, what's your suggestion for me? Is it fixable? Is it worth it? Or maybe just sell it on eBay for parts? How much would it be worth?

Thanks!

There is around 999999 guides/youtube video on how to fix this on google.

Also, its RROD.

Dont spend 120$ on this old fat xbox, the slim version is only 199...

Try this first.

Might just need to replace your power supply.

The troubleshoot indicates the power supply is the problem, but I don't have a spare one in hand. :(

Most of the videos on youtube teach you how to "bake“ or overheat the xbox to fix it, which I really doubt.

I think it's been on sale for 120$ or 150$? Def not worth it to spend 100 to fix it. Sell it for like 50-60$, spend 100$ more and get a new one whenever it goes on sale!

OK, I am just back from Future Shop and a customer service person tested it with an open box power brick.
Same problem, red ring of death and orange light on the power brick stays on.

I think I am gonna give up and just sell it.

The price of a new one at Future Shop is about $199 for 4G version.
I am not going to fix it for $100, not worth it.

Also, even if you buy a new XBOX 360, you can not put XBR on it and play game on USB hard disk, which is my interest.

You need to find out what the secondary. Some RROD are easy fixes but you need to find out 2ndary code first. http://forum.teamxbox.com/showthread.php?t=472553

==SECONDARY ERROR CODES==-

The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code

Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:

All four lights flashing - 0
One light flashing - 1
Two Lights flashing - 2
Three lights flashing - 3

I tried your method, and the code is
0001 power supply problem

Having said that, I have already tried the console with a different power supply and it's the same result.
Maybe it's a power problem on the motherboard, which also means it is hard to fix.

$120 is way too much for a reflow job. You can get it done for half of that.

With regards to trouble shooting, what I would do is open it up, clean it out while checking all the cables, then power it on again while it's open. If it still doesn't work, I'd do the x-clamp mod and see if it comes back to life. If it comes back to life, then you can come back here and get some help with further steps (cleaning it up, modding, reflowing etc).

Whatever you do, do not blindly hand it over to a repair shop. If they don't know what they're doing (and most don't), they will unknowingly upgrade your dashboard if they get it working and then you can say goodbye to JTAG. This happened to me on my first box. It was a sad day.

It seems the problem is not because of overheat, but a power problem. I guess fixing it would be replacing/fixing the power unit inside the xbox, because replacing the power brick is proved not helping.

I am not really a handy guy when it comes to fixing the electronics. The best thing I did for this XBOX is refreshed the firmware after I got it for a month or so. And that took me a long time, LOL.

I also asked guys from GMODZ on this forum, and they don't fix RRODs. They told me all the fix are temporary and not worth it. :(

Yes, for a regular xbox it's not worth it. However for a JTAG'able box, it's definitely worth it. Since June '09 the supply has been on a constant dwindle.

Even if it's somehow a faulty power converter or connector, there are still latent overheating problems with the fat boxes. While doing an xclamp fix it may not directly resolve your power converter issues, you're going to have to do it anyways.

If you can find someone who will repair it with a reflow and install the JTAG modification for $120, then it might be worth it rather than doing it yourself.

I can't find anywhere in Toronto to fix my xbox and JTAG it for less than $120. :(
