not that great a deal after you look at the starting price.
$1849 for this laptop and you can get a Toshiba with higher specs for $1699

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetai...id=&newdeptid=1 (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=1&WLBS=fs%2Dweb2&biasid=0084AEEC9866420297D69014EC729573&sku_id=0665000FS10019558&catid=&newdeptid=1)

i hate how futureshop jacks up the price and then puts on rebates to make it seem like an amazing deal.

Agreed. But it's still the cheapest laptop I've seen for a while.

After taxes and final rebate (mail in) = $1861

pros: Dvd-rom, 256mb ram, 14.1 lcd
cons : sdram, celeron, s3 savage video

Compared to this hpq notebook the difference in performance of an Athlon and DDR with a Radeon video makes up for no dvd or less ram (add more DDR yourself), 0.8" less screen

http://www.redflagdeals.net/forums/viewtop...pic.php?t=10665 (http://www.redflagdeals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10665)

Shipped with taxes = $1541.99 Cdn (No rebate waiting period)

yeah, true. i wish they still kept the < $1000 laptops for sale. i guess companies figured out that they didn't make much money off those laptops.

I love their descriptions:

Taken from the HP Laptop page:

"Processor: Mobile Intel Celeron 120GHz"

Who the hell writes these things? Damn monkey's could use training. Reminds me of the time my sister bought a TV which was adverstised as stereo, but was really mono.. she's still waiting for her $20 futureshop credit and it's been 3 months.

Well, people like us close to the border can participate :D.
Not that I'm looking at a notebook right now but hoooweeee!
The HP1201 laptop for $600US was a damn good one; esp. now that they've upgraded it to 4401's w/o asking.
14.1" XGA
XP1500+ (btw, this has Powernow! which people say is better than Intel's Speedstep)
128MB DDR (easily upgraded)
Radeon 7500
20GB drive
8x DVD (some say, it could ship with CDRW support as well).

Mobile PentiumĀ® 4 processor
at 1.7GHz-M
15" SXGA+ TFT Display
384MB DDR RAM
30GB1 Ultra ATA Hard Drive
8X DVD-ROM Drive

Bump it up to a 2.0GHz-M for only $150USD more.

Dell Canada wants $500CAD for the same upgrade, bringing the same machine total to $2999CAD.

Why is there such a price difference for US notebook models? Doesn't make much sense to me

That $699US laptop requires a two year msn internet sign up. Without it you pay $899 which approximates to $1400 CDN.

That Staples US laptop deal has 256mb of ddr not 128mb and a DVD player Cd-r/rw burner.

If you can't get broadband and are going to pay for dial up anyways the MSN deal is lukewarm.

contract is for 24 months 24 x 21.95 = 526.80-200=326.80/24= 13.61 a month for dial up. so basically yeah I see it as the laptop is really $899 with reduced dialup rate 24 month contract.

Even if you don't go for contract you have free MSN dialup for up to 6 months with the purchase of a computer at staples in USA.

oh my goodness .. that Staples flyer has $2.94 for a 50 Maxell spindle after MIR!! How come those Americans get such good deals??

I have been asking myself the same question for years.
Canadian apologists defend our dealess way of commerce with tales of exhange rates, duties, smaller markets, and so on.

For a deal addict living in Canada...seeing all those american deals is pure hell. Makes me appreciate the few times there are better ones here than there

I just hate MIRs though.
They're doing scams now where a properly submitted rebate will get rejected (edict by the manufacturer, see PNY et. al) to dissuade people who use coupons on top of the rebate. One screaming match later (with proper documents of course), it magically becomes "valid."
Ugh, as if they're not raping the legion too damn lazy to submit them.

FutureShop has a sale on a comparable laptop for $1799 Cdn after rebates:

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetai...5RARJTNA3X06DM7 (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10021391&newdeptid=1&newlang=EN&logon=&langid=EN&dept=0&WLBS=fs%2Dweb3&biasid=21KG5720WEA19N90L5RARJTNA3X06DM7)

It looks like everything important (processor, RAM, CDRW/DVD, etc.) seems to be the same except that the FutureShop version has 30 gigs of hard drive compared to the US Staples version. Note that in the Staples.com, the same laptop is currently selling for $1299 US so the FutureShop price may not be that bad.

Uh, not sure what currency conversion rate you are using, but $899USD isn't even close to $1400CAD.
