Hi There,
My daughter caught a cold yesterday and developed a fever last night....just wondering if its ok to give her juice. She doesn't want to drink any water or eat. I want to keep her hydrated, but all she wants is breast milk and not sure if thats enough liquid for her. So is it alright to give diluted juice? I'm just worried about the amount of sugar, or is there anything else someone can recommend?

Thanks

For children 1 year or less it is recommended that you seek medical attention from your physician within 24 hours. It could be nothing. Kids often get fevers when teething.

Not drinking is a serious issue.

Please seek advice from a medical professional if this persists.

Go buy a jug or small bottle of pedialyte or however it's spelled. I wouldn't worry about it yet, unless his behavior is way off. ie: when you're sick, sometimes you're not hungry and it can be the same thing with kids.

Actually, breastmilk is the best thing for her right now; and she'll probably nurse a lot which will result in more milk production unless there's some underlying factor preventing it. Its normal for her to want to nurse more ... let her do it as often as she wants. The breastmilk also contains antibodies to help her fight off whatever she's fighting off. I wouldn't give her juice myself.

At 12 months, I'd avoid juice and supplement with diluted formula.

Thanks for the link!

Her fever broke this morning and she seems a lot happier, eating and drinking now too. Thanks for the info!

+1

Whenever my DD was sick, the only thing she'd want was breastmilk and that was the best thing.
Lots of info about breastfeeding a sick baby here on kellymom (http://www.kellymom.com/health/illness/baby-illness.html). My DD nursed till 27 months and each time she was sick and not drinking or eating, I was so grateful she was still nursing.

Actually not true.
