Presently I am on Sony alpha system with almost all of my lenses being Minolta and one Tamron 17-50. I will be selling some of my spare lenses which would leave me with some cash to blow. Debating on 2 things here

Option #1) Wait for the Sony A77 (or some other body) as an upgrade from A500

Option #2) Change camera system (I dont know why.....JLT)

Option #1 seems easy for me as I can sell stuff I dont use and put in some some extra money for the upgrade however my inclination is towards a total system change. This would/could take some time but I guess I can slowly start the transition by buying a body + one lens(with my initial sales) and add lenses as and when I let go my rest Sony alpha stuff.
If all goes OK, I'll have around $800 ~ $1000 to start with.
Looking for honest opinions on which path to take and if option #2 in better.........canon or nikon ?

thanks

Before I say anything I'll let you know that I'm not an expert in DSLRs nor photography.

Now here are a few questions you should ask yourself
1. Why do you want to upgrade the body? Is it lacking functionality?
2. What made you consider change of brand/system? Is sony missing some feature that the others have and you would like to have as well?

If you just want it so that you can Own a Nikon or Canon then you should just keep your A500 and current lenses.

My experience: I got my T2i and a few consumer range lenses within the last 8 weeks and I haven't even taken 1000 shots but I keep wanting to go to an L lens and 7d because I would just like to haveit. However everytime I have the urge to buy one, I go online and look at the images people have produced with a T2i and kit lens and tell myself that until I can reproduce that I will not upgrade.

As far as nikon vs canon issue If you want video go Canon, If you want better menu navigation go Nikon. Everything else is splitting hair, between the D90 and T2i most will agree that photo quality is a tiny bit better on Nikon. You will have to give the forum specific cameras to compare to get a real answer. Finally you will find that if you switch to canon or nikon the accessory aftermarket is much bigger.

I would stick with Sony Alpha unless you are looking for specific lens from Canon/Nikon. or you have friends from Canon/Nikon that you would like to share lens/accessory with them.

i would wait till the A65 & A77 get annoucned by the end of August. That one should smoke all the current APS-C camera to date.

if you do video, the A77 can even do continous AF, which Canon can not do so far. and Nikon can't do properly.

Thanks guys. I guess my mind has been changed......will wait for A77. I was also checking specs for A580.
To me it seemed pretty impressive comparing the Canon/Nikon models I was thinking of switching to.
Add to it its price which for me was affordable.
As for video, its not important for me but again it wont harm.
Any comments on A580 ?
