Hi all,

I ran the 10miler (16k) yesterday. I ran it continuously until maybe the 10-11km mark, then it was a mix of run/walk thereafter. A couple of fast bursts near the 12-13k mark and then walked, and then when i tried to burst it at the 15k mark, i felt a huge cramp in my left calf muscle (the big piece of meat on the back of lower leg located between the ankle and knee), so i had to slow it down a little bit in order to finish. I thought i did everything right... but what do you marathoners and experienced long distance runners think?

A little about me.

I'm by no means a heavy-duty runner. My objective was to complete and maybe increase my endurance. Besides a couple of runs, i'm not much of a runner in training. There's something different about a live atmosphere run compared to training runs in my neighbourhood. The drive to run for long distances just isn't there during training.

So as far as events goes, I've done the 5k, the 8k, the 10k and i just finished the 16k. Am i ready for the half marathon? The cramp is a weakness or possible point of failure i'd like to look at before i sign up for that. Technique?

After the 10k, i developed blisters that would probably make people scream crazy! I've solved that issue with the double layer. Even after the 16k, there was a little redness and i felt some pain as i walked, but there was no sign of any blister (water filled bubbles).

As far as the 16k, i started it like any other race day. I drank 2-3 bottles of water around 1-2am. Ate a McDonald's big breakfast around 6-6:30am. Drank one of those pre-game gatorade juice packs around 7:50am. I took care of nature 5 minutes prior to the start. The run started at 8:30am.

During the run, i took small sips of gatorade at the beginning water stations and drank more and even the full cup as i passed the later water stations.

Prior to the run, i did all my warm-ups. I figure it has nothing to do with the warm-up otherwise i would've developed cramps much earlier on and not at the 15-16k point prior to finishing, but what do you suggest?

Thanks in advance!

The 2 most common reasons for cramping are probably over-exertion or lack of electrolytes.

If it's overexertion… train more. For a 10mi race, you should have had a few training runs OVER 10mi to get your body use to it. If this was the first time going over 10km AND you tried to push your pace a few times, it's not surprising your body said "no" and cramped up. Once you start putting in more miles, this issue should resolve itself.

Some people cramp up when they have a lack of electrolytes in their body. Some people eat a banana pre-race to help. Others drink more gatorade or have gels. You'll have to experiment what works best for you here as not everybody is the same.
