Kids are generally more active and would put out a good sweat in a CG.

Check out Columbia jackets. Jackets with patterns/designs that kids love, thin, very warm as they block out wind and takes a good beating. $50-$150.

Lands end? I got a pair for my 5 year old when it was on sale for $12, decent quality IMO. They carry bigger kids sizes too. But now that Sears does not carry it, possible refund will be a trouble if you shop online.

Children's Place is not too bad either.
