Hey guys,
Can you play a soft modded xbox on xbox live?
Does anyone know?
Is there a difference if you play a burnt game vs a regular copy?
I'm curious, as I'm debating on using a friends and getting xbox live.
Thanks!

depends on your firmware that you are using and if ms can detect that version.
certain dvd drive firmware can get around detection while other drive's cannot.

How can I check the firmware on it?
I recall one time the firmware needed to be updated because the newer games wouldn't run on the old firmware.
All I want to play is NHL12 online via xbox live.

Even if you have the newest firmware, and its currently safe on live, I wouldn't bet on that lasting. Its just a matter of time before they learn how to detect it and ban your console.

I honestly wouldn't bother trying to play pirated games on xbox live, ive heard of many that have been banned, thus rendering your xbox only usable off-line.
Kijiji has tons of video games for decent prices. I've bought and sold many games through kijiji.

what if you had a modded xbox and played a legit version of the game online?
What is Microsoft detecting. The game or the system?

They detect the firmware that you need to flash to the DVD drive in the 360. The hacked firmware is what allows copied games to be played.
I should know; I got banned months ago. Bought a PS3 and put my 360 into a box and haven't looked at it since.

They detect both. If your drive is modified, running a legit game won't protect you.

This is actually incorrect, the firmware is not detected on Xbox Live, it is errors and discrepancies in the backup game disc which can cause a ban.

Current firmware with retail or proper back up is fine. No one knows for sure but I believe the current firmware is undetectable by MS. This is why they have introduced the new xdg3 discs with more space and have added ap 2.5/2.6 checks for back ups.

So having the latest firmware update, and a legit copy should be fine? What if in 6 months time the firmware is updated, but I'm still playing on old firmware and still with a legit copy? Any ideas.
This really makes me think, why don't I just get a PS3.... I just enjoy XBOX.

There are no gaurantees, no assurances and no way to predict. If you play a "burned" game before it's release date, you'll be banned. If there's a kernel update that necessitates a DVD firmware update and you don't upgrade your firmware before playing a game using that new kernel , you'll be be banned.
I'm not sure why you're asking so many questions. Be smart about it and it won't be an issue. Make one dumb mistake and you'll be banned. Considering that 1 xbox on sale costs as much as 2 new games, if you can make it playing 3 games before being banned, if you keep buying a new xbox every time you'll be up .5 games in savings if you take this strategy.

+1. That and I would be cautious during really popular releases for the so called 'ban-wave'. Be careful when GoW3 releases. =)

Have there been any ban-waves recently? I don't pay that much attention to the scene, but I don't recall hearing about a mass wave since just before COD MW2 was released.
