This seems like a good deal to me on Spec... Costco is the seller and they normally sell for 1019 but this week it's 150 off. So you get the 2 year warranty - what do you think?

Great price, not buying an HP laptop again with the problems I've had with their laptops.

The CPU is excellent, but the HD6490M leaves a little to be desired.
The ASUS 15.6" with the i7 2630 + Nvidia GT540M for $829.99 is a better deal. Mostly because the GT540M is much better than the HD6490M, but also because ASUS laptops are of higher quality than HP.

Thanks for that - I think I need the 7200 rpm HDD and the USB3 ports tho - and I am replacing a 2 year old dead Asus - so not going to buy another :)
But you are right - for two pretty crappy GPUs the 540 is a better one.

Hmm, I'm very surprised the ASUS doesn't have USB3.0. I'd say the GT540M is "decent" and the HD6490M is "horrible".
As for going from ASUS to HP... eeehh I wouldn't recommend an HP laptop to anyone lets just say that.

If purchased online with a credit card (e.g., Smartcash) would one be eligible for an additional year of insurance under the CC's extended/excess warranty policy?

Good question... I would think so - Costco's stated warranty is 2 years. Gold Cards should extend that by one year.

It's a personal choice, but I wouldn't go over 14.1" in a notebook. Anything bigger is just too cumbersome.

It is possible that you *may* get a third year of warranty. If you take a look at the specs for the computer (http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329744-64354-64354-5082212-5118968.html?lang=en&jumpid=oc_R1002_CAENC-001_HP%20Pavilion%20dv6-6193ca%20Entertainment%20Notebook%20PC&cc=ca), you will see that the 2-year warranty is described on this page. This information could help with convincing the CC company of the eligibility of the product. ;)

With the recent turmoils at HP... one has to consider if HP will bow out of the PC business... as originally announced...
