View Full Version : New Fall Series (Terra Nova, PAN AM, Charlie's Angels, etc): Love or Hate?

Shockingly the only new Fall series I love is from NBC. WHITNEY.

Charlie's Angels
Free Agents
New Girl
PAN AM
Prime Suspect
Terra Nova
Up All Night

All poorly executed either with Casting and/or Writing. Except for Terra Nova & Prime Suspect I shut it down after 5-10 minutes, they were that bad! I was also shocked to hear during Sunday Night Football that UP ALL NIGHT, over 25 Million tuned in?!?!

Terra Nova - not so good
Charlie's Angels - not so good
Revenge - not bad, but not my type of show
Person of Interest - will try

I like the cold war spy aspect of PAN-AM, if you stopped after only 5-10 minutes you would have missed that. Playboy Club is also good
Person of Interest seems like it might be good
Terra Nova was ok, not much other scifi on so I'll give it a shot

Watched Person of Interest first ep last night. Not bad at all; I have a big hole to fill since Lost and 24 are gone, and I am willing to give this one a chance.

Unless it's on HBO, Showtime, AMC or one of those specialty channels I don't really give network television a chance; as they rarely tend to disappoint.

I have a big hole to fill since Lost and 24 are gone.

So do I. Lost has been replaced by Breaking Bad actually, which is a major improvement in the 'plot driven slow burn with occasional action' category. But for the last 4 years there seems to be no series that is grownup oriented, loaded with big budget high quality action, plot driven rather than focused on boring family sideshows, has actors that don't look like models/waifs, and isn't about some boring policemen or legal/medical employees as the main characters.

Had my hopes up for Terra Nova but IMO the premiere was very poor. They had the opportunity to do something original but then inexplicably decided to write the lead character as a stereotypical policeman who sometimes breaks the rules and his wife a stereotypical top-of-her-class doctor. On top of that they write the son as a stereotypical rebellious teenage boy who is angry with his father, and the daughter as a stereotypical booksmart-but-shy-with-boys bore. And then rather than an exposition of the unique setting, most of the time the camera is pointed exclusively at this family of stereotypes as they speak and react predictably to each other's predictable statements and actions.

I can't understand why network TV doesn't have anything like 24 anymore. Wasn't that a hugely popular and commercially successful series? Didn't they learn that adult-oriented, high intensity action with a focus entirely on plot rather than gossip/fraternization gets a lot of viewers? Seems these days the only stuff worth watching is on the specialty channels.

I've watched 5-0. I somewhat like it. It has some longer running plots, but for the most part, its a self contained weekly plot. I liked the serial nature of 24 (or even Lost) where you'd be fairly lost tuning in half way :) Most network tv seems to have gone back to insulated weekly episodes. Like the above poster I seem to find most of the tv I like on the specialty channels (less and less from network tv).

I also now seem to wait to see which shows get canned and which ones get picked up (and get decent reviews). It helps filter out the rubbish. I seem to be luck if there is one new network show per year that is worth watching.

My understanding is this show is basically policemen solving the crime-of-the-week in under 45 minutes; i.e. not substantially different from the approximately 17,000 iterations of that formula which have preceded it.

If I'm way off please let me know.

Same here. All the networks combined manage to pick up one high quality show every four years (3.5 to be charitable), on average. Obviously the specialty channels combined have a much higher hit rate than that.

I can't believe I forgot about PERSON OF INTEREST.

My favourite this fall, Jim Caviezel is perfect and works well together with Michael Emerson. Jonathan Nolan is an amazing Writer and would love to see his brother Christopher (Batman/The Dark Knight) get involved in future episodes.

Each episode does normally have an insular story, but there is also a continuing thread that has gone on from last season to the current right from the first episode.

I'm hoping Person of Interest is good, Jonathan Nolan (Chris Nolan's brother) + JJ Abrams has to equal win. What I'm really waiting for is Alcatraz in the new year.

Watched PoI last night and liked it enough to switch away from Grey's Anatomy. :-0

So they have a computer like the one in the Dark Knight, but camera's and not sonar and it processes info to determine if there's a threat to national security but it was also producing results for regular people.

Maybe Finch's limp was the reason he decided to help the smaller people? Maybe he got mugged or something?

Oh yeah. Every episode, TV movie, mini series, and webisode, (and also Caprica). Agreed wholeheartedly on all counts. Sad but I simply haven't run across anything of that calibre in years.

Terra Nova:

I was excited to see a time travel/dinosaur story but it quickly got bogged down. They've set up a huge community in the past which takes all the time traveller/exploring new world excitement out of the show. They'll probably have stupid story plots such as the teenagers falling in love, etc.

The only show I like so far on network TV is Revenge.

Loosely based on The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.

Funny, this modern adaptation is more faithful to the novel than the The Count of Monte Cristo (2002 film), starring Jim Caviezel.

Now if they can figure out how to tie some loose end, like how she got incarcerated and what skills she learned from prison, etc.

I thought it was hit and miss, but actually funnier than the other 2 shows I had high hopes for: Whitney, Up All Night. Or maybe I just enjoyed watching Kat Dennings jugs.

But all better than last years "Afion: In the flow" or whatever urban jargon that show was called. Ive seen funnier test patterns.

Hawaii Five-0 is technically not a new show as it is in its 2nd year. The OP is asking about THIS years new shows.

I can only say Hawaii Five-O is a lot better than the remake of the 1970's Charlie Angels. Charles Angles has been ravaged by the critics and its ratings have been dismal. I expect it to be cancelled soon.

This is probably the only one that stands out so far. I just hope it doesn't become too formulaic. The only overarching stories they have going at the moment is the the cop hunting Reese. There are backstories yet to be revealed as well, but thats not really an overarching plot, just a standard plot device.

The ones I'm looking forward to are Abrams other funded project, Alcatraz which looks great and Grimm, which looks like a less family oriented Once Upon a Time. Ohhh and the Walking Dead season 2, which starts tomorrow! Yay!

Terra Nova is gawd awful! And all those supporters on Imdb! To see a good show with dinos, watch Primeval. 5 seasons worth...

TN SHOULD go off the air after it's 13 episode run but look for Spielberg to step in and get it a 2nd season (they saved the Simpsons for 2 more seasons so who knows). So far, TN has failed to impress this household. But then this is the same umbrella as Falling Skies, also with it's PC "family drama" moniker slapped all over it. Bah!

For a good laugh about the series check this out:

That's why I like Primeval. Lots of people dead because of the dinos, including kids at a highschool in one episode. Also, in the UK you (apparently) CAN kill the dinos and not have to worry about the (PC) sensitivities of the kiddie audience...

Yes, Pan Am is plain boring .. and wrong in so many aspects (the latest episode have them landing in Hong Kong in one scene... and we hear an announcer speaking mandarin over the intercom at the aiport..Huh.. Hello? HK was still under the British Colony at that time.. There was no way Mandarin would be used...the correct language should have been Cantonese) I keep watching every week hoping that something will pique my interest but all the characters are just too one dimensional...That Cia storyline is ridiculous.. I think the show is bound to be cancelled.. the ratings are falling every week..

I hadn't even noticed. Even my PVR switched itself back to Benny Hill on Thursday.

If they want to use the franchise they need comparable babes to the original 3/4, or perhaps the movie trio. I only caught the 2nd episode and none of the girls seemed anything special. Cheryl Ladd was on NCIS this week and even she (60 now according to wiki) looked better. (No worse anyway).

I'm enjoying PoI too. Grimm looks decent, especially if the guy from Prison Break's character (Big Bad Wolf) remains a comedic regular. Can't be bothered checking out OUAT - looks too much like a chick show.

Gotta love the babes and the setting. The early 60s seems like a good era to set a show, with Kennedy, Cuba, the Cold War, etc. They'll probably have The Beatles on at some point. They just need to get rid of Captain Doogie Howser and replace him with somebody older and more interesting. I was amazed to read on imdb that he was 2nd choice for the Kirk role in the Star Trek reboot.

Fortunate for the show then that most of the audience are likely Caucasian, and therefore completely missed that. It's certainly unrealistic to have the plane flying to a different exotic locale every week, just as the pilots' ages are unrealistic, but I'm sure the aim is to create a fun drama, not a boring reality show. I like the way they use actual period footage for the airports, giving the show a more authentic feel than it would otherwise have. I learned that the actress playing the French stewardess is actually from QC. Wonder if they film there at all, to get the European settings? I'll have to look into that.

Edit: Nope, NYC. Interesting how at least 3 of this season's new dramas are NYC-based. (PoI, AGM, and PA). (And Unforgettable too - almost forgot! :)).

I like Maria Bello so I gave it another chance and watched the second episode. I loved it, my favourite!

When I first saw the Pilot, the other characters didn't sync but something changed, I guess they just needed more time to click. I stayed up all night catching up, I'm now watching the sixth episode.
