Whatever it takes to be seen at night.

I saw that deal too. It looks kind of tempting. The only reason I hesitate is that I leave my bike locked up outside during the day, and I feel something like this is bound to vanish mysteriously while I'm not looking. On the other hand, it might look kind of conspicuous if someone tries to remove it; but then again, someone managed to tear off the light I attached via hose clamps.

http://www.monkeylectric.com/index.htmThey still call that "bike POV" or "spoke POV" (for "persistence of vision") in some places. That's something I'd definitely be worried about leaving on an unattended bike.

In reference to the first post - the identical EL lighting is cheaper on eBay if you're looking for a deal. Cheaper than even the groupon offer was. Similar to the groupon for the magnetic balls, eBay is already more cost-effective.

My concern about the EL lighting tube, is that if I am running 10 feet of glowtube off 2 AA batteries - how visible will it be? My expectation is that it would work with supplementary UV lighting (gogo dancers sometimes wear this EL rope lighting under "black" UV lights at clubs). So far I am not convinced that it would increase my visibility on a city street, when compared to a similar investment in a proper flashing bike light.

But if you want the EL tubing "look" on the dark bike trails at night; go for it!

I suppose I should check if the product is offered at DealExtreme. (A fine source for all your bike-gadget needs, DealExtreme. They have products I've never even heard of anywhere else for unbeatable prices.)

The eBay EL tube control units (including those offered by DealXtreme on eBay for less than the cost shown on the DealXtreme site) look identical to the ones offered in the groupon, except the groupon one has a sticker with a "brand" on it.

Can you give an example of one of these eBay auctions? <el tube bike> turns up zero hits.

Search:
EL dance party

They're rave toys, not normally used as bike lighting

I see! Thank you; I'm glad I thought to look here before spending $17.50 on one of these.

Searching on DealExtreme for "flexible el" only turns up models powered by DC 12V car only and not AA. Are they called something else there?

Thats pretty cool for $8, I will buy one.

I have a bad track record of lights being stolen off my bike though. People are jerks. As a result, I have lights attached to my helmet.

I have 4 of these and ideally I would put 2 on the seat post and 2 on my handle bars:

There's 2 modes I think

I also have these:

Paid $10-15 for all of these.

and I think I only used my frog lights once on a late afternoon ride. I wouldn't want to be biking @ sunset but just in case I have these for those rare days.

I feel as though that looks cool, but is not very functional. A very small portion of the tubing is actually visible from the front or back. It is not very bright either, so it wont be nearly as effective as an actual set of bike lights.

P.s. why the hell are bikes allowed to have flashing lights on the road? Cars are strictly prohibited from having flashing lights for good reason. From time to time, I will pass a biker on a dark street with these high power strobe lights flashing in my eyes and it is blinding. I can barely see where I am driving, which is not safe for anyone. It is annoying as hell to have the same thing flashing in your rear view.

To attract attention of the other motorists.

We don't want to have a huge ***** rear light dangling on our bikes. There's no way someone will see us if the lights are just turned on.

I'm a driver as well and it doesn't bother me. It saves me the headache of hitting someone and going through insurance.

A flashing light attracts attention, but way less annoying then the HID (?) lights car have that are so bright they put my highbeams to shame. I also have one on my helmet so I can direct light anyplace not just where the bike is pointed.

I've gone through quite a few headlights on my bike; the switches and whatnot keep wearing out, so it gets more and more difficult to switch them on and keep them switched on. It's really getting on my nerves.

Do you think one of those ultra-bright Cree lights are safe for a bicycle? I'm worried about blinding people.

I've been pretty happy with my EL tube, but I already broke the contacts on the battery box. Fortunately, at $5 it is easily replaced.

DealTicker is offering this now. Is it likewise available for much cheaper somewhere?
