Hi guys,

I am going to be a godmother to a 1 year old girl. I'm very excited about this new role, but at the same time It will be a very expensive
event for me. I have to travel out of town twice, once to take a class and another for the baptism the following week.
I don't have much of a budget, but of course I want to buy something meaningful and precious for my goddaughter. Does
anyone have any suggestions? I'm not looking for anything strictly religious but more on the spirtual side has her dad is agnostic
and the mother is Catholic.

Thanks again guys!

In all seriousness, get nothing. Just explain to the parents your situation. The only thing I would recommend is some sort of momento that the child might appreciate to have later in life, but that could be something hand-made. Kids that age are inundated by useless gifts. And if the parents are put off by not getting a 38th stuffed toy for their kid, then they have the problem.

Good luck.

The tradition in my culture is that the godparents are responsible for dressing the child from head to toe for the baptism. The whole outfit will usually run at around $150, could be more, could be less. If you wanted to kick it up a notch, a little piece of gold jewellery makes a nice gift.

It might seem a little frivolous to spend that much on an outfit for a few hours. If your family traditions are more practical, then I would suggest giving cash.

First off, congratulations.

Who is the godfather of the child? If its not your bf/husband, maybe ask him. You could go get a nice piece of jewellery and pay half each on the gift.

I love giving coins from the Royal Canadian Mint. You could give something with her birth year, or find a butterfly coin or something feminine. Some of the coins / sets are quite inexpensive (I believe they start at $9.99, or for sure $19.99) and it will likely be different from anything else she'll get. Additionally, there is no religious link. Have fun!
