View Full Version : New Poll: How is geo-location working out for you?

This is the dumbest idea someone ever came up with and I can't believe RFD adopted it after the comments from the DoD geo-location. I mean even on my pron sites they can't even get the 'meet girls in ________ right now!' correct.

It probably works really well for the programmers sitting a few blocks from the server farm but to the average users it does not work.

So out of all your devices, how often is geo-location actually right/useful/accurate.

I'm sitting in downtown Ottawa
My iphone has me in Toronto
My work has me in Verdun Quebec
My ipad has me in Markham

If I was to come to this page as a new visitor and given deals from 400km away I'm hitting the back button right away thinking it was strictly a regional website for that specific city.

I concur. It thinks I am always in Toronto for some obscure reason. I click on some link and it takes me from Montreal to Toronto.

The classic main.php/alldeals always takes me back to Toronto.

Geolocation simply sucks. Any chance of going back to the old layout?

I think I like the look but it just bugs me that it says Regina when I am sitting in Saskatoon! I clicked on the link to Saskatoon at the bottom and so that worked but every time I come back it said Regina.... Then I found the "change city" at top of the page so changed it to Saskatoon but now when I come back to the page it says I am from ",SK" - guess it really just does not know where I am from.

I click links for things like coupons and it drops me into deals for Toronto, despite it being a global thing anyway.

Yesterday, I was in Toronto (I live in Brampton). Today I am in Chatham as I assume many other Teksavvy customers are. I don't like it at all and will be sticking to the forums.

I'm on my PC and I don't see anything. Ad-block ftw?

Congratulations -- you have acquired the godly power of Omnipresence. Now you can take advantage of deals all over Canada with your new found ability and lose money even faster.

We're working to improve the geodetection. Depending on Internet technology it could definitely have you in another place. My wireless stick goes through Telus and thinks I'm in BC. it's certainly not perfect but is for the most part accurate and again - something we are looking to improve.

Of course, you can always "change city" in the top right. This should be a one-step process and you'll be good to go!

I am always in Toronto, ON. Sure... I change my city every time I log in (that's once every couple of hours) but each time I went to do something else, came back, I got moved back to Toronto. How many times can a girl move in one day?

Well now that the cat's out of the bag with ShopWise... :)

Expect an update to the RedFlagDeals app very soon. Finally the app will be able to make use of phone features and really display the content in a better man, not just a "mirror" of the mobile site as some have commented about. And it will now have access to our mobile forums right from the main screen - the quickest way to get there :)

In general I try and confuse anything that wants to know where I am in an anonymous (without asking) way. So if it doesn't work well I call that a good thing ;)

When I want to say where I am I do.
