View Full Version : [Merged] Wok Of Fame - Live Cooking Buffet

Coming out of Hockey Sushi in Brampton on Hurontario today, I noticed across the plaza a new Buffet restaurant opening soon, Wok of Fame - Live cooking buffet, what's interesting is the Live cooking part of the description. Not sure what this means? Do they mean fresh food cooked for you or is this one of those hot pot asian places? Anyway I snapped a pic, may be back when they open. Could be an interesting find.

two stone lions guarding the front entrance. Must be Asian hot pot type of restaurant.

btw, how's Hockey Sushi food in Brampton ? Worth the visit or stick with the one @ Thornhill.

Yes the 2 Lions in the front caught my attention too, will be interesting seeing the finished product.

Hockey Sushi Brampton was much like the location in Thornhill, it is good, most here know I rate Hockey as probably my 2nd favorite AYCE sushi joint. There's not as large selection as Yangs, but overall if you like decent service, straight fwd sushi, it delivers. The Brampton location is more comfortable than Thornhill, spacing and decor slightly more modern and they do serve eel sushi for lunch which is a plus, I posted a 10% coupon link in the Yangs thread and they accepted it. The damage with 2 pops not included was a very reasonable $26+ with 10% SC, I gave them $28. Another good thing is if you get out late, they do serve lunch till 3:30PM.

This is 2 minutes from my house, I'm in that plaza all the time, mostly at the Beer Store haha... This place has been under construction for so long now. It used to be some kind of furniture place

I found a review for a "Wok of Fame" restaurant
- most likely, they will cook the food in front of you.

"At this big show cooking restaurant, you can eat anything you want.
You just walk along the buffets,
and if you want, you let the chef 'wok' the food for you."

We were driving by when I snapped that pic so didn't see anything on the glass that would indicate this, but to my untrained eye, I would estimate very soon, before christmas probably.

this can't be better than mongolian grill, they're just using woks instead of a stone grill except this gimmick will die in a year or two, you'll probably get to assemble your own stir fry and have them do it in front of you with regular buffet stations, everything made to order will just result in ridiculous line ups and wait times, most fresh foods need 5-10 minutes to cook properly from scratch, fresh dumplings take at least 10-15 minutes unless they're pre-boiled which defeats the purpose.

made to order food gets delivered to your table fast enough at any regular restaurant, whereas a regular buffet has all the selection in front of you, this restaurant tries to find a niche in the middle which doesn't exist for a reason- nobody likes to wait in line for every item of their dish to cook, i'd rather spend my time at the table chatting with friends and family

and literally no jokes you can do this at home, who doesn't do live cooking with a wok/frying pan :D

Yeah without seeing the final product, it is hard to make an assessment on this place, it could be a miss as much as of a hit. The Food Bev biz is very competitive in the GTA. Buffets come and go, I hope for their sake they offer a reasonably priced dining experience, that seems to be geared towards fresh ingredients cooked per order. I have tried Mongolian Grill also, and though it was ok-good, never been back more than once. We will wait and see how this place is when they open the doors. From the looks of how big the place is going to be, it looks like they are sparing no expense. Interesting location, I would have thought they would try Markham 1st before Bramption.

I peeked inside and their interior design is AMAZING. Just visited their webpage and they're opening on Nov 21. Turns out non-alcoholic drinks are included and they will have a 15% off promotion.

They just had an ad in the Brampton Guardian. The 15% off is for their "soft opening period" but it didn't state how long that would be.

Here's the website: http://wokoffame.ca/

Pricing is pretty steep,

22.99 Mon - Thurs dinner
28.99 Fri-Sun dinner

Hopefully they can back it up with a good product, considering these prices puts them higher than Mandarin's.

Woah...those prices are insane!

Is that before or after the discount?

I checked the website; I wonder how the playground area works? Are there people to register the kids? Or is it just an area for kids to play in while one parent watches, and the other eats?

I dunno...with the Mandarin flagship restaurant 10 mins away; I don't know how it'll keep up.

On the other hand, are there any hard reviews (Can't find any online) on this place?

Also, I wonder what the difference between lunch and dinner are (other than price).

Oh well...I can see this thread growing in the next few days! :cheesygri

I was there yesterday at around 5:10 pm and the doors were locked, yet workers were inside. Are they really open?

EDIT:

I just called and they stated they were open, may try it today. I wonder if it's still considered "soft opening".

Was there for dinner on Tuesday (day after opening) and the food is good.

Teppanyaki Section - Interesting set up, a nice variety of freshly cooked to order fish, chicken and beef. Then on the other side there is a stir fry area where you choose what you want then they cook it up (you also choose the sauce for your stir fry).

Hot Table: Typical North American Chinese fare... noodles, chicken wings, battered fish, chicken, shrimp (I really like there batter - it's light), ribs, etc.

Sushi: I'm a sushi fan and love 168 Sushi... I compare Wok's sushi section to be like Mandarin's which is of a lower grade. However, they have raw fish and enjoyed the salmon sashimi.

Salad & Dessert: Typical stuff - however they had fresh smoothies during dinner.

Drinks: you get your own and it's included in price... soda's, milks, bottled water, juice... all for your choosing.

Waitstaff: Nice, friendly, but all they do is seat you and removed your plates.

Overall impression: We enjoyed it and went back for lunch on the Thursday. My only concern is how they will keep up at the Tappanyaki section when there is a lot of people.

15% off until mid-December (if I remember correctly). I'm curious what they serve during the weekends considering the price is quite steep.

Tried it out last night....won't go back ever, especially since there's Mandarin nearby for buffet.

The negative reviews in the Yelp link http://www.yelp.ca/biz/wok-of-fame-brampton pretty much sums up my experience!
*seems that most of the negative reviews are filtered...i wonder why?? Did the restaurant purchase advertising space on Yelp? A quick google search shows a lot of other people are not happy with the Yelp censorship

We went to Wok of Fame for dinner tonight. It was there "soft opening", so there was a 15% discount. When we first arrived it was a bit chaotic, but we had made reservations and were sat quickly. They are definitely still working on their hostess station and since it was the first Saturday night they were open, it was fairly controlled chaos. It is very nicely decorated and everything was clean. The food was good, however there were so many otptions we couldn't try it all. At the teppanyaki table you could choose your own meat and they grilled it for you. We were too full though! The stir fry station was was well organized and tasty. It is similar to Mongolian Grill where you choose your own noodles, and meat and take it to them to stir fry with the sauce of your choice. The non-alcoholic drinks are all included with your meal and include bottled juices and water. We can't comment on the sushi (neither of us eat sushi) or dessert because we were just too full!

I would have to say it is a mixture of Mongolian Grill, Mandarin and Teppanyaki restaurants. We both really enjoyed it and will go back again.

From the reviews here and on other sites, it sounds like a combination of Dragon Pearl, Mongolian Grill, Tuckers marketplace, asian style all rolled into one. Good to hear the drinks are included, this would make it close to the Mandarin's $25 weekend dinner price, Brampton $1 additional. Still waiting to see when we can go, would like to try it to judge for ourselves.

And sometimes people actually click on the links they find there. And then if they feel they have an opinion worth sharing, they do so. ;)

Most of the reviews on Yelp are from newbies too. It doesn't mean that they're shilling for the restaurant or its competition...

This place had the potential to be a big 'tourist' attraction for Brampton (i.e., east asians coming from Mississauga or Markham). But it looks like it's not heading that way, based on the reviews.

Ok...went there yesterday for lunch.

What can I say? Walking in, without bias, it looks huge with an overload of Asian/Oriental (not to confuse SE Asian) decor. Yes it is true that there is too much if you think about it without theme a central theme; but it leaves a lot to the imagination...almost childish and pure.

Anyways, floor tiles, tasteful, clean and shiny. (going to be interesting when the snow arrives...could be dangerous!)

Ok...food was ok. Nice idea but you could see that when it gets busy; there would be waaaayyyy too much bottleneck.

Two wokking stir fry sections with about 2mins to prep for each person.
Two Teppenyaki sections which take almost 5 minutes for prep (mind you...weekday for late lunch (1:30), these dishes were made to order and there were no line-ups for anything.)
The only issues is that one station does fish, the other meats. I take it when busy, they just continously cook.

Buffet table? Ugh...mismatched bowls and unattractive to boot. Looked like a Chinese Pot Luck...food was typical.

Sushi bar? Sigh...the sashimi was nut cut all the way through (ie - my salmon sashimi was was not separated through the belly...so i had a 12 pieces of salmon sashimi all connected together at the base.). It was frozen too...thawed out, but pre frozen. It tasted "ok" but mushy.

The sushi was ok, but like most ayce sushi, too much rice.

Desserts? Fail...cakes were still partially frozen!!!!

Drinks are ok...unlimited bottled juices, bottled water, milk and fountain soda.

Service:

No insult here intended...but the two hostesses were South East Asian which took away from the Oriental Asian effect Immediately. Ok, no biggie. But the hostess serving us had no clue! She took myself and my wife to a table and seated us when the manager stopped her and told her that someone else was already sitting there. Well...up again as she searched for a clan table. What a first impression.

Next...i think they are trying to follow the Mandarin model of keeping the tables clean, and to take away the dirty dishes; but for crying out loud...dont 't take away my plate before I'm finished eating off it!!! Sheesh!

My BIGGEST COMPLAINT: they must lace everything with MSG!

Near to the end of the meal, my wife and I sufferred that bloated, nauseousness as if you ate a tub of lard feeling. I only get that if I have had an MSG overdose. Ugh...sudden death.

Paid the bill (with discount and weekDAY lunch...$35.00 tax and tip in).

Verdict: as nice as the place is; at the existing price point, it won't survive. Weekend dinner at 19.99 migh be fair, but still that's too generous. However any less of a pricepoint and it won't be sustainable.

Unless they do something with this restaurant, I unfortunately can't see it lasting to next Christmas. Good idea, horrible pricing and execution.

I encourage everyone to try it at least once to make your own opinion. But for me, if given the choice of a Chinese Buffet experience, I'd rather go to The Mandarin and unfortunately it is competition with the Mandarin that will hasten the demise of this restaurant.

For cheap buffet...there is always Chan's which unfortunately i prefer to this place and 1/3 rd the price.

Thanks, this is helpful. I foresaw a problem with live woking part when I saw the the premise for the restaurant. When it is busy the made per order will be hard, though without seeing the restauarant 1st hand I wonder is it just making a batch of food fresh in front of clientle.

On the open to Xmas, maybe, but when we were at Hockey sushi 2 weekends ago, there was a lineup outside the door. If others had a similar experience as you did, I would think they are in trouble. Repeat customers are the key for survival in F and B.

I think Chan's might be closed.

But back to Wok of Fame. I just love this place but I have to agree about the pricing. The difference between lunch and dinner, and weekday and weekend is too steep and tough to justify. I really enjoy the fish on the grill and the stir fry. The hot table is adequate and could stand improvement but I don't use that section as often as the others. I wish them luck. Hopefully, they incorporate the current 15% discount into new standard pricing and narrow the "prime time" price premiums.

To Avi and DD,

Just to clarify, I haven't been to Chan's for about 4 years nor would I say I really cared for the place. My comment was simply just to contrast my feelings for wok.

The two thIngs about wok that kill it for me:

1-MSG
2-Pricing

Lastly, is Chan's closed? I never noticed!

Thanks all!

Apparently the soft opening is over, so no more 15% off.

Last been there was September of this year for dinner which wasn't worth the price - noticed a little change in the menu but wasn't worth the extra money unless you like crab legs and the week old roast beef sitting under the warming lamps. Not saying the place has gone down hill but price vs selection from lunch to dinner wasn't justified. Will check it out again during my holiday break for lunch but the did bump up the pricing for December though.

Still haven't been and this is literally 2 minutes from my house.. I'm in that plaza every day basically.. It's so friggin expensive! Seems like every time we think about going, and inquire or check the menu, the price has gone up again. I swear they must have done 5 price hikes since opening.

But I can definitely tell you it is busy as hell still; the place always has customers and it seems to really be hurting Hockey Sushi which has looked fairly quiet lately.. which is a shame because me and the Mrs both like Hockey

I don't mind trying it once at the high price if the food is good. I think we may try it out tomorrow for lunch. They are just slightly cheaper than Dragon Pearl.

I found that the last time I went, there was that lingering feeling of MSG. Not bad to try once, but probably won't be back at the current price point.

As far as hockey sushi, I've felt that over the last year, service and quality have really gone downhill. 168 or Tokyo Maki across from Shoppers World are now superior with 168 being my preference. That is for Ayce sushi I should clarify.
