Yesterday I woke up and noticed that my puppy's mouth had swollen up (top right side of her face). I tried to look inside but the pup was in a lot of pain and she wouldn't let me get a closer look. From what I had seen I thought that she may have gotten bit by a bee or spider. There was a red bump/welt that was swelling right between the canine and the back teeth (most of her teeth haven't come in yet). Today I got a better look inside her mouth and realized that her right canine was discoloured (turning gray) and it was definitely broken, as it's much shorter than the left one.

She doesn't seem to be too bothered by it. She still plays, eats and chews her toys though she does seem to favour the left side of her mouth now. I'm taking her to the vet today. From what I've read about it on the internet people seem to suggest different things. Some suggest pulling the tooth the others suggest antibiotics and letting the tooth fall out naturally.

I'm wondering if anyone had this happen to their puppy? If so what did you do? TIA

I wanted to update this thread in case anyone was wondering.

I took the puppy to the vet today and the vet looked at her and confirmed that it was a chipped canine and that it was infected. He prescribed antibiotics for her and hopefully the infection will go away. He also said that I should keep checking up on the infection to make sure that it doesn't get any worse.

She doesn't seem to be in pain and has a healthy appetite so hopefully the broken canine will fall out soon to make room for the adult teeth. :)

Sorry to hear that.

Although it was obvious a little pain as would not let you look at 1st and swelling.

At least you did logical and got to a vet.

I would be a bit weary if tooth was turning grey as would mean its been happening for a while and not over night. Or possible its ready to fall out but something still hanging onto it making it a dead tooth.....

This is a great puppy/dog health care question. Often puppies deciduous teeth (puppy teeth) become discolored to a gray or purple gray color before falling out. The reason for the change in color is that they have lost their blood supply. Usually this is from chewing on hard objects and is probably more common in larger breed puppies, but can occur in any puppy. There is no real problem with this and they will eventually fall out as the adult tooth under it erupts. Of course like any deciduous tooth if they don’t fall out when the adult tooth erupts, it is best to have it extracted for pet health reasons. Rarely they will have a surface root abscess with swollen gums at level of the tooth root and have to be extracted early.
