Nothing too fancy and expensive, but something somewhat authentic and in the $20-30 range. Any good recommendations?

Funny you asked because I went to La Palette (http://www.lapalette.ca/) over the weekend with friends and it was really nice. Very relaxed atmosphere, small place (as you would expect on Queen) but really cool vibe. Menu is great, we had the wild boar, bison, sushi grade salmon, and duck. We all agreed that the mains were very good. They have this thing called Prix Fixe which is something like $33? and gives you a select entree, main, and desert. We didn't do it because it restricted the mains but seemed like a good deal. Desserts were OK (nothing amazing), but the lemon tart was really tart, which was nice. I'd go back for sure.

Horse meat? How does that taste like? Is it coarse and tough?

For french bistro style I like simple bistro. If you sign up on diningdatenight.com, you pay $10 when you book a reservation but get 30% off your bill.
I found this neighborhood place in the east end on chowhound called Bistro Camino...and I absolutely love that place. Ambiance is not cool or modern or even nice...but the food is great, prices are great. Its a japanese-run family restaurant.
I also kind of like Le Papillon but with $30 you are pretty much having an entree and nothing else, no drink no appetizer

I know a couple of people originally from Quebec who highly recommend La Palette. Haven't gotten around to trying it myself yet.

We've always had awesome food at Le Paradis @ Bedford and Davenport.

I've been to Le Papillon (Front/Church) a number of times and enjoyed it. I think it's more expensive than La Palette but not unreasonable.

The way they prepared it, it was very nice and tender.

That definitely wasn't on the menu this time. Our waitress said they always change things because some meats aren't readily available.

there is a great one that opened last year in Streetsville, Mississauga and they have great French food. Very small menu but consistent. If you are willing to travel, the price is very reasonable. http://www.bistrochezanne.ca/

I like Jules Bistro on Spadina a lot ... small and cute ... sorta cheap for what you get - they have a nice patio in the summer.

Seems like there's tons of options downtown, any further north?

Chez Laurent? Yonge north of Sheppard. I use to live minutes from it and had it a bunch of times. Reasonably priced French food.

Can't go wrong with the Beef Bourguignon or lamb shanks (if you're a carnivore). They usually have a salmon dish that is yummy if you like fish.
