Incredibly smart indeed but I was mauled by a German Shepherd when I was 8 years old. Swinging on the monkey bars in the playground, a german shepherd jumped up and grabbed my leg with it's teeth, tore out lots of skin which resulted in 26 stitches. The dog wasn't put down and it ended up being my neighbours dog three houses down. Ever since then, I would never go near a german shepherd. I always wanted one because they are incredibly smart:(

That's too bad, because they are such amazing dogs. Your incident was due to bad ownership, period. Before I got my Shepherd, I had two Siberian Huskies. The one displayed aggression toward strangers at an early age. I realized this and made sure she was never in a position to bite anyone. Sometimes dogs are aggressive for a number of reasons and there's not always a way to fix it, but it can be managed, and that onus is on the owner. I was once bitten by a tiny poodle and my cousin was bitten by a black lab.

My Shepherd is the sweetest dog on earth. She doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body. I made sure to socialize her like crazy as a puppy and its paid off. She loves meeting new people and new dogs.
