Hey everyone! I have a couple of questions regarding both Graduate degrees, any help will be appreicated :)

So basically, I am a 2nd year student at York, in the bachelors of Health Studies program, specializing in Health Management. I am planning to do a Masters degree in the near future, and I decided to do some research on the various programs that appeal to me. I am not sure if I should pursue a Masters of Health Administration (MHA) or a MBA-specializing in health management. I have done tons of research comparing both the MBA and MHA, and the responses have been split between the two. Some say the MHA will provide a better ROI, others are saying that the MBA will give you a more executive position compared to the MHA.

My questions are:

1) Which Masters degree would be more "versatile" to possess in the coming future, in terms of Career advancement/Salary/ROI? More importantly, get to a top- level executive position...CEO etc.

2) Do employers have a certain preferance for a MBA or MHA?

PS. The two programs that I am interested in are the MBA @ Schulich specializing in Health Industry Management, or the MHSc @ UofT in Health Administration

Additional info: I have a general business diploma from Seneca. And the majority of my courses in the current york program overlap with the UofT curriculam such as Health services accouting, health finance, health economics etc.

Thanks in adavance everyone! :)

Really appreciate it :D

Two VERY different types of degrees. Stop thinking about whether or not a degree offers good ROI or versatility (what does that mean anyway?). Unfortunately, things being the way they are, it will mean NOTHING by the time you eventually manage to start the program.

Rather than trying to plan what degree you think you need, figure out what job you want. Work your way backwards and you'll have your answer. So... what job do you want? And what makes you think a MHA or MBA will get you it?

To put things in context, I did my BA PPA at York and a joint MPH/MSc Finance at the London School of Economics in the UK with some work in between. Stupidly expensive programme, extremely focused course load. No 'ROI', no 'versatility'. However, in the end I'm the profession I always wanted.

I would think if you want to work in healthcare MHA is the way to go. However you really need relevant healthcare work experience and contacts. A MHA or MBA is useless without those things. Good luck.

All of the Management with MBAs that I know at in Canadian Hospitals had considerable experience before embarking on an MBA.

With the C-Suite it is even more critical to have experience. This in itself will trump the MBA.
