10 years ago, everyone was content with wearing a $15 earphone. Today everyone has to pay at least $200 for the Beats by Dre headphones or another expensive one.

*this one is interesting because as technology gets better, sound quality improves so there is a rationale for getting more pricey headphones. However, it doesn't stop the fact that some headphones are more overpriced than others because of Brand.

10 years ago, most were content with wearing a warm jacket and paying $150? Today, everyone, even teens have to pay $400 for Canada Goose jackets.

10 years ago, most were content with homemade coffee or Tim Horton's coffee. Today, a large portion want the "Starbucks" brand. I think when people hold a "starbucks" cup, they feel like they are part of the elite society or something to be honest.

What do you think is the future trend?

Heard of the Sony MDR headphones ?? Those were the Beats of today...10~20 years ago. People weren't content with cheaps ones back then, may be only for some. Then, they started buying expensive MP3 players, to show off to walkman / CD player.

Yeah, people worn expenisve North Face/Eddie Bauer back then and many still do. They were Baller brands then and CG of today.

Home / McD Coffee was a lot less than Tims and people still paying more to get a better cup of coffee then.

Have a feeling I am doing someone's homework but the more things change, the more they stay the same. There will always be people buying expensive things to show off and post as they are in a higher status.

I think this depends on the person. With my wardrobe when I was younger I was content with just mall brands - GAP / BR / AE. As I grew older I dove into more name brand stuff (Diesel / Energie - Yes I went through a Gino phase, lol and DKNY). Thought I was happy the be previous brands mention and generic jeans. Then I got into name brand jeans, paper denim cloth, wanted R&R and True Religions so bad (thank god I never pulled the trigger). From there I moved onto nudies, my first pair of premium jeans. From there I went into Japanese denim. From Denim I went to pricer tops / shoes / outwear brands. All of the pricer items are a little less main stream in Canada, meaning I steer away from what the general public buys. To me I prefer what I wear to be unique when compared to the masses, eventhough not many people will notice. That in a nut shell makes me extremely brand aware. I see myself as always being like this from this point on.

As for buying more "premium" stuff in other areas, I wouldn't mind as long as it performs well. Also the fact that as you grow older you make more money so you can afford to splurge a little more.

how old are you OP? maybe 10 years ago, these things didn't matter to you? expensive brands were just as predominant back then, you were just too young and naive to notice them. now you're older you see the value of things and you make threads like these.

i only go by 3 criteria

1. design, does it appeal to me?
2. quality, is the material and cut and fit great or just okay?
3. is it all worth the money the retailer is asking?

and in most cases the answer is "no", and in some cases where it is yes, i hold of for season sales and grab everything at 40% off or more. dont care if it says mexico or ralph lauren on my tags, no one on the street goes on the back of my t-shirt to see what it says. Its like these lil kids today looking at my canada goose vest and saying its nice and how much was it (it was $200, now it retails for $250 for some reason) , but back when i bought it in 2007 no one could care less.

there will always be fads no matter what

and brands will adapt to the fads aswell and start designing style that cater more to whats hot at the time.
