This was inspired from another thread. I'm curious how my fellow Canadians get their movies. With so many digital options out there these days, I would expect to say a mass exodus away from Bluray and other physical media. But we shall see.

usually the "free" method for the ones I'll watch one time only, but BR is the preferred way if it's something I know I'll watch multiple times. I'll also watch good action movies in theaters as well.

Torrents. I haven't paid for movies in years. Only idiots pay for what you can get on the internet for free.

I like the movie theatre experience. I don't have a flat screen tv or anything fancy at home, so watching them at the cinema is great.
I win or obtain many premiere passes so I see them for free, or I wait for cheap Tuesdays (5-6$ movies).
On the rare occasion, I rent from the video store.

Sorry guys, I didn't add the movie theatre. I wasn't thinking. Maybe if Mod wants to be nice and add it for me, but I don't think I can edit my poll after it's created.

Done, just keep in mind piracy talk/promoting piracy is not allowed, so try to steer the discussion away from that and focus on your poll results

On top of the prices, the biggest complaint I have about watching is theater right now is that too many flicks are being released in 3D. I wear prescription glasses, so it's really painful for me to wear another one on top and it warps my vision. I keep wishing that this is just a fad that will fade away soon...

I like the movie theatre experience. .
Same here. I admit, some theaters suck, but even the "subpar" ones can be entertaining at times when the audience is in synch.
I enjoy going to Varsity and leaving the theater with people expressing their real thoughts about a film - and genuinely appreciating cinema.
I don't want to sit in front of my computer screen all the time, and I rarely watch things on TV. Plus with the Scene Visa card/Scene Card it makes it worth it.

I don't think so.
Movie companies are making big bucks from it and idiots keep paying to see it in 3D.

I have to say, being able to reserve specific seats in an AVX theatre has greatly increased my interest in watching movies in the theatre. It just seems so much more civilized.
Some independent films are hard to find on torrents but I've found Netflix to be a great way to pick up the slack there. I can't stress enough how much I love Netflix.

I don't download them because 1) I don't mind paying for something I will use/watch/etc... and 2) the quality has usually be buggered up somehow.
I prefer to store my blu-ray discs on my media server at home. I use the MyMovies plugin for Windows Media Center that allows me to browse my collection on-screen.
I prefer keeping my movies in 1080p, and I preserve the HD audio tracks as I can easily tell the difference between a DD and DTS HD MA track.

If we were friends, would you be opposed to me bringing a hard drive over on the weekend and um.. borrowing a few movies?
I mean, that's the great thing about a digital copy. You can lend out your movies without worrying about them getting damaged.

It depends on how interested I am in the movie. If the movie trailer captures my attention, I'll watch it in theatres. If if was good in theatres and I can see myself watching it multiple times, I'll buy it on Blu-Ray. If the trailer doesn't capture my attention, I'll download it to confirm it was a bad movie. That usually is the case. The only exception to that was Rio and Death Race. Rio was bought on Blu-Ray day 1 after watching the torrent and Death Race was bought on DVD after waiting for a mega price drop.

Bought a copy of Wall-E today and I fully intend to rip it to my local media server for streaming to my TV, etc.. (not sharing online).
An activity that will soon be illegal thanks to Bill C-11.
In fact, because I have a nice collection management system I am MORE inclined to buy movies because I can enjoy them easier.

I'm all about portability these days, and digital files and Netflix are the way to go there. I can start watching a movie/show at home on Netflix, pick it up at the exact spot on the Netflix app on my phone, and log into my account at my friend's place (or wherever) and continue watching it there seamlessly. Same with digital files. Physical media is too clunky for my use. I'm about 85% towards all my physical media being ripped to digital, and good riddance.

DVD/Blu-ray. I have a rather large collection but roughly 20% are review copies (i.e. free). That said, I buy a lot less then I used to (no more fancy special editions of Korean films and other foreign films for example), and I won't buy a BR over $15. I rarely go to the theater (the annoyances far outweigh the benefits) even if I often get free passes to movie premieres. I recently joined Netflix and I like it. I mostly watch movies I woudn't buy and tv series.

Movie theaters and Blu-ray/DVD purchases for me. I prefer to have the disc format of blu-ray overall because of my theater setup and overall picture/audio quality it gives. Still don't think streaming and downloads are there yet, especially on a projector 106" screen setup

There is nothing a blu-ray can do that a properly-ripped digital file cannot, especially since those digital files are often ripped from the blu-ray anyhow. There is no difference in technology, nothing. Digital is digital. This is not like the analog vs. digital debate, regardless of how large you're blowing it up.

It will get there, but currently, the so-called HD quality of movies on Netflix is nowhere close to Blu-ray quality. And while I acknowledge the portability issue, it would only matter to me if I were to go and live somewhere else for a few months or more. I have absolutely no interest in watching movies on a phone, or watching a movie in increments while I move around from one spot to another.

Mostly I go see movies at the theatre. Helps that the movie theatre is down the street from my house. I COULD just download films but not interested in seeing bad quality cams or R5s. And so many bad movies anyway. So bad, I wouldn't even download them for free to watch. And yet people will still do that. Eek!

BluRay/DVD, movie network package on tv and movie theatre.
We only go to the movie theatres for something that we really want to see like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings. Because of that we spend a bit extra to get the movie network package. Got a BluRay Player over a year ago so our BluRay collection is getting bigger.

I use web streaming services "unlike" Hulu, but when it is a really great sci-fi then I head to the theatres for the true big screen experience.

I don't see a rental option. I still rent the majority of blu-rays I watch. I've got a nice home theatre in the basement and only want the best audio and video quality, and I don't believe in downloading. The rest (movies I want to watch multiple times) I buy. I usually get the combo packs with DVD and or digital copy so I can watch them on the road, or via my apple tv.
For my living room, I'm content to watch Netflix or rent from Apple. It's a small screen with 2.0 sound so blu-ray is not needed there.

+1. I purchased decent HT equipment and I want it to sound and look its best; therefore, BRs only for me.

No, we have bandwidth caps because ISPs see that the future of multimedia is streaming and they are positioning themselves to make money. It has very little to do with pipeline congestion - despite what they and the conservative media might tell you.

Yes, the rental option is rather lacking from the poll... :) Aside from stores, and the commercial Cinemail/Zip operations, and kiosks, don't forget the public library. It varies depending on where you live, but Halifax has a decent selection, and if you are on top of things you can get on the wait lists early for new stuff. A cheap way to get part of one's movie diet, especially if you aren't in a particular rush.
I just wish they had a kiosk that rents blu-rays.
The Zip.ca (Ontario/Nova Scotia) and Best Buy (West) kiosks do carry Blu-ray.

I purchased most movies that I liked and would watch on a few occasions, and rented others. But my rental options are now very limited.
I have not been impressed with the compression of HD channels/streams and therefore will not pay to one time stream a lackluster copy of some movie.

I don't feel bad about it either. I can't believe the money I wasted collecting DVD, HD DVD & Blu-ray Disc.
I still go to the Theaters, especially if it's in Ultra AVX. I will even pay multiple times watching it, like GHOST PROTOCOL. It's not just about downloading it for free but going out having fun as well.

I like movie theaters also, it is the one of the few special places I can pick up, little special friends, which hang on to your clothes and you can take them home, and within 24 hours you can wreak havoc in your home. What are they, you ask ? None other then Bed Bugs.

It hasn't happened, yet to you. I don't go to the theaters for that reason and the movies stink and it's too expensive.
