Hey everyone, so today I signed up for a 1 year Goodlife membership and I am looking for insight on how good of a deal I received.

So the rate is $20 bi-weekly and it is multi-club. I also received no enrolment fees and received 2 weeks free, another 1 week pass for a friend, a gym bag, waterbottle and t-shirt.

Seems pretty much standard type of deal... I pay $50 a month at my local YMCA but I had the enrollment fee waived. I get 10 guest passes but I didn't get any free swag like you.

This actually pisses me right the hell off. WTF? I pay $73 monthly with NO towel service (not that I would need it) and I have been there for 2 years now. I asked 3 friggin times before I reupped his past time if there was any way for me to get a better rate, because I only need the one 24 hour place and no amenities, and they told me no 3 different times.:evil::evil: So to answer the original poster, yes that is a kick arse deal.

When they said no, that's when you say 'I guess I'll see what the other clubs around have to offer'.

OP, that is a great deal.
I tried to get a deal with Goodlife(Etobicoke) and found that they don`t really care even when I walked away.
It was more or less take-it-or leave it.
They phoned me once with the same offer, went elsewhere and got a better deal.
Home gym.
Offer was $25 bi weekly, plus tax, not a big deal.

I think the YMCA is the best deal in town. What I like about it is that you can cancel it at any time, and re-activate it at any time. No contracts, no extra fees (except for a 1 time initiation fee), no cancellation fees. For 50 bucks a month you get the use of all YMCAs across the GTA, and all the classes they offer. It's family friendly, and most of them have really upgraded their gym equipment to excellent standards. You also get a few personal training sessions when you join, and I believe you can bring a guest whenever you want.

Why is the Y "family friendly"?

I find children unpleasant so if there are gym's out there who aren't "family friendly" (thus I assume deterring people to bring children there) that'd be a plus in my books.

Sorry to say I agree with you.
Kids running around a gym area, dangerous, kids peeing in the swimming pool.
I wish public areas with swimming pools would add the water colouring chemical when somebody pees in the water.
That is a gym I would like to join.

Hehe I'm proud to say that and I agree - not only a gym but I'd join an almost anything that banned kids from entering.

I'm not much of a 'bar guy' but one of the reasons I like bars is that it's the only place I'm virtually certain I won't be expected to tolerate someone else's damn wiener kid.

Even the movie theatre's have been mostly overrun with G/PG rated crap which attracts kids like a magnet.

It is not the kids that normally bother me, but the parents who don't bother to take the time to control them.
I have been in the gym when a parent came in and told their son to either stay on the treadmill or the bike while the parent did their workout. The kid would get some exercise, which is lacking in most children and showed discipline.

Other places, parents have let their child run loose. I want to smack the parent. There was an incident at an airport where a parent was traveling. They have a cat in its carrier. The child kept kicking the carrier with the cat in it. The mother did nothing other than look at her child. I asked her if she wouldn't mind to do some parent and tell her kid to stop kicking the cat's carrier.

I signed up at Goodlife this past weekend and got the same deal (less the 2 weeks free, but oh well). I tried to get the $1/day promotion they offered last year but they wouldn't budge.

Maybe I will see you there sometime.

It's family friendly because they have programs specifically for kids, camps, and a daycare. Children are not allowed into the conditioning/weight room. However if you're a mother with a child, you can drop the kid off at the daycare while you workout, or bring your kid to the child-friendly activities. I'm sure there are kids in the pool, but there are sections roped off for lane swimming that the kids dont go in.
However I will admit there does seem to be a lot of teenagers at the Y, and they can be a lot more annoying than small children.

I agree about teenagers as well so banning anyone unless they're over 18 sounds good to me.

Hell make it 19+ and sell booze - now that'd be a gym for me

Damn. Nice deal. My friend and I both got the same deal...25/bi-weekly, only got the standard gym bag.

My bf is paying the same at another gym but also got towel service thrown in.

Does anyone happen to know how to transfer a membership btw? Are there fees?

Wish I could say the same.

I've been with the Y since I was in jr high, and I was quoted over 700 dollars for my yearly membership renewal. And that's just basic. Plus memberships are well over a grand now.

I picked up a one month pass while I shop around other gyms, and that was just under 90 dollars. I'm not even remotely exaggerating. The YMCA is far from the best deal you could get. Local city run gyms are around 350 a year, and that's likely what I'll be moving to.

And the lackluster attitude towards the gangs of children that run around the work out center is infuriating. I have no problem with them if they're actually there to train, but they're usually in packs of about 7-9, all flooding one area of the gym, yelling and leaving weights all over the place.

Well, they are not. If you can't get the discounted rate from them, it will be even worse. I can't get the discounted rate.
YMCA was one of the gym I thought about first before I chose Goodlife.

I have many problem with them because of personal preferences:

1. Not convenient. If I have to take a long trip to go, I won't. Goodlife is everywhere. There is one close to work that I can walk to. There are 2 close to home that may take me less than 10 minutes of driving. And, they even have one close to where my daughters used to learn guitar.
2. Parking. If I have to fight (or wait) for parking, I will hate to go.
3. It is more expensive.
4. Too many people. Yes, kids and teenagers too.
5. When I visited and that was not even in the supposed to be busy hour, all the equipment are occupied. I really mean every single piece of equipment were occupied including mats.
6. Not 24 hours.

ROFL. You know that’s an old urban-myth, right?

I get a kick out of this still being around after working in the industry for the last 15 years now. Besides, there are a thousand other organic compounds floating around the water that would set it off in addition to urine.

Simple chemistry really...To be fair though, this little white-lie has stopped an entire generation from wee-ing in the public pool, so I guess it’s not all bad, lol.

He He, yes hopefully a deterent, like putting up an alarm system notice.
Nice thought though.
Thanks.
Just don`t go let the kids know this.
A sign as you enter the swimming pool area might help?

I pay $40 monthly through my corporate membership. When I set it up at the gym they were saying it's 50% or so discount from their normal membership (in line with the HR literature on the deal) Free towel service and it's valid for any Goodlife in Canada.

I am with goodlife, signed a 1 yr contract, got the bag, water bottle and can use any goodlife in Canada, I paid no enrollment fee and pay $18 bi-weekly. I had done some research and this was the cheapest I could find.

Yes it is. And in my case, my employee negotiated a deal with Goodlife for $350/year with NO initiation fees. I still didn't join with that offer. I am not a fan of Goodlife clubs in general. I prefer the local clubs that are owned/operated by individuals from my community. I tend to get better service there.

Not a bad deal ~$585/yr tax in.

I'm a long time Goodlifer and have seen the prices vary all over the place. Currently I pay annual fee of just under 500$ tax in, this includes towel service. By paying upfront for the year is how I was able to achieve a discount.
I can access all but the "Premier" clubs. Which are now fewer than in the past. I think one downtown Toronto, one in Calgary and one in Vancouver.

I won't comment on Goodlife itself other than to say I've had no issues since joining in 2003. It works with my lifestyle. I exercise in different clubs (cities) frequently so I need a network of clubs and Goodlife provides me this.

I have joined since 2002. I am paying $22.32 (tax) in biweekly for 2 person. i.e. $582 annually for 2 person, tax in, no towel service. I can access all but the "Premier" clubs. My club used to allow me to access a swimming pool in a hotel and the current price $22.32 for 2 person was already raised once by $4 dollar from the original price when I joined in 2002. We paid the initial fee $850 for 2 person when we joined. At that time, I figured I could break even in the 1st 13 months (comparing with the price of no init fee).
