Hey guys,
I'm looking at a couple rowing machines at Costco.
http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=10358696&whse=BCCA&Ne=4000000&eCat=BCCA|111|2268&N=4012033&Mo=5&pos=1&No=3&Nr=P_CatalogName:BCCA&cat=23440&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-CA&Sp=C&ec=BCCA-EC815-Cat111&topnav=

Any chance someone here has used either of these or can comment on the effectiveness of rowers in general?
I've tried running on a treadmill in the past but the jarring on my knees resulted in a lot of pain and I had to quit. I'm looking for something that is compact and I can store away in the spare room when I'm not using it but can still give me a good calorie burn. I've looked at ellipticals as well but most of them are big and seem like they'd be hard to move around, so I'm hoping that a rowing machine might fit the bill for me.
I've just never used one and looking for some general comments on them, at least from costco I can return it if it doesn't work out.
Thanks guys,
K

I've been using a Concept2 rowing machine for years at the gyms I've joined in my lifetime. They're amazing. Great machine to top off a back day mixed with cardio.

I have a Concept2 rowing machine at home as well ....they're the only rowing machine worth getting IMO.

Don't settle for anything less than a concept2.
If you really want an erg, I would suggest getting a used one.
http://www.cdnindoorrowing.org/ergsales.html
These machines are bought brand new for the competition and sold off after, each year.
You better hurry though. You have to get your name on a waitlist. Not too many left.

these are the exact ones I use right now. It's a damn SHAME not a lot of people use it and they're brand new too. I think on a weekly basis I use it the most. I should have my name embedded on one of the machines :razz:

I'm looking for rowing machine, as well. No doubt Concept 2's are top notched - but has any of concept 2 users, used other machines, and how does other machines compare, for those that can't afford a Concept 2.

Thanks for the replies everyone. The Concept2 is out of my price range at the moment given I've never used a rowing machine before. I decided I'd try the one from costco and if it doesn't meet my needs I can return it and get something better like the concept2. That link you posted sure does make the Concept2 tempting though. :/

a rower is long and i don't know if there are cheaper models that fold. but i would think that any machine you put away doesn't come out often. you say running jars your knees? your gait is probably all wrong. just one question: do your feet slap the ground? i.e.: are they noisy? bad sign.
but let that go for now. a trainer to sit your bike on is between 2 and 3 hundred. that might be a good start. then, when spring/summer arrives, you can go outside and begin to walk/jog slowly. you could even join a gym for a year. see if you want to continue exercising. most don't.
if you do, you'll have a better idea of what you need for home.

I've been reading more about the concept 2 rowers and man they seem like good machines, I just wish there was a place to buy them. The link above would be great if I lived in Ontario, I'd even drive to get one but here in Saskatchewan I'm a bit out of luck. I really like the concept of being able to hook the monitor to your pc and track your workouts. I wonder if there are any comparable brands that are more accessible in Canada.

It's hard to say exactly what I'm doing wrong. Maybe it's just years of a desk job and little physical activity that has caused my knees to not be strong enough any more, but after just a few running sessions I was in enough pain to go see the doctor and it pretty much continued until I took a week off work and pretty much just sat on my butt and let them rest. From that experience I have little to no interest in running/jogging again, it's just not even close to being worth it. That's why I'm trying to seek out something I can use for some cardio and to stay active that will hopefully be gentler on my knees.

you can read up on how to use it. watch some videos of proper rowing. almost everyone at the gyms goes too fast. and not for long enough. and tell us how your butt feels the first few sessions.

Order it directly from Concept 2 in the U.S....I live in Ontario.....and that's what I did. Got mine quite a few years ago and to get it from the U.S. after shipping and exchange etc. is was about $1,250 CDN.
For a commercial / gym quality machine that will last and work trouble free over a couple of decades of home use, and with the $ close to par with the U.S. ....it still represents good value even if you have to have it shipped up to you from the U.S. IMO.

do you remember how much duty, brokerage, and other taxes, you paid ? Their website - states shipping via, UPS, which I hate. The more research I do, the more it's leading me to the concept 2.

Not off the top of my head...it was awhile ago when I got it. Sorry.

The shipping was a non-issue for me.
And as for researching the Concept 2 - there's no need IMO.
It's the only robust commercial / gym quality rowing machine on the market ( IMO ) and it's THE gold standard of rowers ....nothing else even comes remotely close to it. .;)

FYI - just called up treadmill factory, and they sell model D with PM3 for $1,099, plus taxes, so ~$1240 for brand new. Just $90 more than the used one posted in this thread. Of course, the PM4 is worth about $100 more.

I ordered direct from concept 2, the cost for the D with the PM3 was $900 + $65 shipping. Plus they estimate on their site the brokerage and tax will be $190. So the rough total there is $1155 everything in. When I receive it I can let you know the exact total cost, should be next week some time.

no duties on exercise equipment.
your biggest cost factor aside from the cost of the machine itself is HST, followed by shipping and brokerage.
 watch for UPS tossing that machine on your lawn...hell, it might not even get there

Received my Concept 2 this morning here's the final cost breakdown.
The cost on the site for the Model D with PM3 was $900 + $65 shipping. Here's what I was charged in the end in Canadian funds on my Visa.
$991.30 to cover the cost plus shipping.
$75.00 Brokerage Fee
$3.77 Tax on brokerage fee.
$44.87 GST
--------
$124.04 Charged by Purolator on receipt
Grand total of $1115.34 and I think it took 8 days from time of order to get here.
A few other observations;
I picked it up from the Purolator place and it fit in the back of my 2010 Honda CRV and I was able to easily move it around myself, two people would have been nice but I had no problems getting it loaded in the vehicle as well as unloaded and carried upstairs at my house.
Assembly was a two step process that really consisted of only 8 bolts that I did myself in around ten minutes. All the documentation and the build quality of the machine itself seems to be really top notch.
I did a few test pulls on it but didn't have time to do any more, it's going to take some work getting the technique right I think, and even from those couple pulls I am realizing how out of shape and old manish I've become.
I also need to stop giggling to myself when I hear or say 'stroking.'

Err.. sorry no it was UPS, the UPS deliveries here get handled by Purolator (is that Canada wide?) and it's still branded Purolator so I just called it that from habit. BTW this was shipped to Saskatchewan if it wasn't mentioned, so the taxes that were charged probably vary with other provinces.

thanks for the clarification - UPS handles their own deliveries here in ON.
so, it'll be roughly $1,200 for ON residents. Just $40 savings from buying at treadmillfactory.ca Might just buy it from the store, as I really hate UPS, and their brokerage fees - not sure if it's the same amount as in SK... I don't want a surprise.

if you go to treadmillfactory in markham. knock $50 or more off their stated price. offer to buy it "right now". but don't show much interest. say it's for your girlfriend for valentine's day or something. i won't say they wheel/deal, but they will take offers. i like the place. so much good stuff.

I've done maybe 20 minutes of rowing so far, yesterday I just messed around trying out a few things on it and getting use to the motion and trying to figure out what my technique was like. This morning I did a couple 5 minute rows at around 22-25 spm. I'm pretty out of shape and a bit overweight and it kicked my ***** pretty decently. Can feel a few sore muscles already. What I can't feel is any knee pain which I'm so happy about. It completely prevented me from using the treadmill so unless it crops up later as I turn up the intensity I'm very happy with my purchase.
Getting the general motion is easy, I think refining the technique will take some work and probably some video review which I haven't tried to do. After watching a few technique videos there's some variation in each as to how the drive is done as far as when you start leaning back and pulling with the arms, so I'm guessing as long as you're roughly getting it right a person is probably good enough unless they really want to turn it into something competitive.
The logcard it comes with that keeps track of your stats and total rowed miles and all that is pretty cool, it definitely for me takes exercising to a new and nerdier level, being able to race vs your old times and some of the other stuff it lets you do might give you enough workout variation and motivation to get back on when you really don't feel like it.
I've tried out the RowPro software, I'm not completely sold on shipping them $100 for it yet but it does add some neat stuff. You can put in your height weight age and have it create custom training plans based on what you're trying to accomplish.. weight control, cross training, etc. From just browsing through the plan it looks like it does a decent job ramping up difficulty and it's pretty customizable. It also mirrors the display of the on-machine computer and shows you in your boat on the water with the guy on screen matching your strokes. It does a bunch of other stuff like tracking your stats etc, a big portion of it is being able to row with or vs people online which I haven't tried yet since I'm just using a cracked version. If it turns out to be something I'll use I'll buy it and try the online stuff, I'm kinda leaning this way just because it seems to do a decent job of tracking your stats and logging workouts so as long as my concept 2 doesn't turn into a clothes rack I can probably get my $100 out of it.
So far pretty happy with the machine and I'm glad I went this route over the other ones I was looking at. If you can buy it local for $50 more I'd probably do that though, I just didn't have that option here. :(

We have the concept 2 rowing machines at the gym, I enjoy using the machine but I can ride my spinning bike for 90 minutes but I cannot enjoy more than 10 to 15 minutes on the rower. I feel I get a sore butt after 2000 meters but at least on the bike you can change positions. I use the rower as a cool down from some hard cycling
good luck on your purchase :D:D:D

decided to go with this one... while the concept 2 has great reviews, and build quality - but is a basic machine, which is great in one sense, less parts/things can breakdown. However, I like this one from Costco cause it's got electronic magnetic resistance, allowing it to automatically adjust resistance, giving it the ability to have different workout programs - and even adjust base on your heart rate.
So, it's a trade off between basic/quality vs more function/less quality. I'll see how it is when I get it. Plus it's $400 less for me, after taxes.

I looked at that one too, I eventually went with the C2 because it's what pretty much everyone recommended and it seemed to keep it's resale value pretty good. I did read some good reviews on that brand though if I remember right. Can't really go wrong getting it from costco.
I've been rowing pretty much daily, taking it pretty slow because I don't want to injure my knees but so far there has been very little knee pain. I had a bit one day but I took the next day off from rowing and it was fine after that. Going to try and push it a bit farther and do a 5 or 6k row tonight. Most of my ones so far have been in the 3-4k range.
So far I'm still happy with my decision to go with a rowing machine compared to the other types of exercise equipment available. Regarding the RowPro software, I've abandoned it, I just don't find it offers anything extra over the on-machine display for my current rowing needs.

Actually, it's not just a ' basic machine '.
Rather, it's the ' gold standard ' of rowing machines...the absolute best in the mrket in terms of value and build quality......everything else pales in comparison.

DAMN it ! I had freakin UPS - my rower from costco was shipped to me - two boxes, UPS delivered one, left it at my front doors in the rain, didn't even bother ringing the door bell. Open up the box, and what do you know the housing is busted - looks like the box has been dropped. Now gotta wait for the second box to come before I can go get a refund.
Maybe this is a sign for me to get the Concept 2... but damn it, they use UPS - I refuse to get anything that ships with them.

Ok I've had the rowing machine for about 20 days now. I'm doing about 5k a day on it which takes me around 23 minutes, it's not fast but I'm coming from being an overweight desk job person so I feel really good about it.
A few observations:
I can tell as far as cardio goes mine is improving. The 5k isn't as hard as it use to be.
I'm gaining a surprising amount of muscle mass on my arms quickly. I didn't have a lot there at the start but I can feel a difference already in how my arms hang at my sides.
The fact the Log Card keeps track of my workouts really lets me see my progress. This keeps it interesting for me and I really need to sign up on the concept2 website and log my info there.
The Concept 2 has a lot of functionality in it's computer thing. I exclusively use the 'Just Row' function though, so I'm not sure how much value there is for machines that offer a lot more in terms of that functionality. For me, I wouldn't use it.
I've got callouses on my hands just below where the finger meets the hand, I ordered some rowing gloves that I hope will help this, for the time being keeping the handle in the 'hook' of my fingers has been working to alleviate this.
I am still very pleased with my Concept 2 purchase, the machine is rock solid, easy to use and the logging functionality are what really made it the right machine for me.

150km update.
Still rowing pretty much every day, shaved a minute or so off my 5k time. It's tough to judge my weight loss, a few pounds have come off on the scale but I've put a lot of muscle on my arms and I assume my legs and other areas that are getting impacted by rowing so that is offsetting the fat loss a bit on the scale. I do feel like I look visibly thinner in the face and stomach though. I'm very surprised at the amount of muscle I've gained on my arms.
Rowing is still pretty torturous and I think I figured out why. When I'm out walking or whatever it feels like I can get lost in my thoughts easier and just walk, but when I'm rowing I'm constantly trying to keep an eye on my technique as well as my strokes per minute, calories per hour, distance etc. It makes me more aware of every stroke and the effort that's going into it. I need to badly find a way to counteract that, I'm thinking of just covering up the computer screen thing so I can't see it.
Another option may be to explore some of the racing against pace boats and other things like that the computer offers. Perhaps that can motivate me to push harder in my rowing. So far I've just been using the 'Just Row' function.
I said before the log card was the best feature of the concept2 and it still is, I love the stats it keeps.
Still happy with the concept2 as a purchase but I hate every second of rowing.

Congrats on your results ! Yeah, it's a bit tough to judge weight loss when you gain some muscle mass, as well. One way to truly judge would be your waist size.
I just got my C2 this past Friday - and wow, it really is deserving of all the accolades... solid machine.
Think you should consider changing up you work out a bit to keep things fresh, since you hate rowing. Get some dumbbells and do weights every other day, and cardio in between. I think this will help keep you motivated to exercise... and you'll see much more results in arms.

Hi,
One last decision before I jump in..:)
http://www.amazon.ca/Concept2-Model-Indoor-Rowing-Machine/dp/B008DVF07Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365695898&sr=8-1&keywords=concept+2+rowing+machine
$1030 + taxes, shipping free.
Should I buy it from amazon or direct from concept? Amazon works out cheaper slightly...but other than that, are there any benefits of getting this from the company directly??
Thanks for your advise guys!

Get it from Amazon. I haven't dealt with Concept before but I know from many past experiences that Amazon is easy to deal with in case of any problems.
