Cell phone number question?

Hi
I had a cell number with plan which I transferred over to someone else (sold the contract) he in turns changed the number.
Number is cancelled for more then 3 months. Is it possible to take the same number again or not. Does it stay with their Network or I can go with any provider?

Another question is similar number is not assigned to anyone. Is there website where you can check which range or number is assigned to whom?

I think they hold the number for 6 months and it stays with the provider. You can't go to Rogers and ask for a number and then move it to Telus

I am not sure about the waiting period. But I am sure about the porting.
