Hey everyone,
So with all of the dash cam sales thriving in the group buy forums, there were a few posts going around for professional installation. I have contacted a company in regards to getting a group buy going for the professional installation of the cameras.
The company is Lockdown Security in Scarborough, Ontario. They sell and install pretty much anything to do with car electronics (alarms, remote starters, car audio, lighting, etc.) I have been dealing with this company for a few years now, and have had the best service at amazing prices. Since I know the owner, I spoke with him today to gauge interest in getting a group buy going for the dash cam install.
He is willing to do the install for $25 (normally about $50) inclusive of wiring and labour. This will include mounting of the camera, hard wiring the camera to the battery or the ignition (customer preference), and hiding the wires.
The owner can only accommodate this price if we have enough customers willing to participate in this group buy. That being said:
Please post on this forum if you are interested in taking advantage of this deal. I will keep track and make a list of all parties interested. Once we have enough interest, I will further post instructions on how to proceed with the install.
Any payments will be made directly to the company at the time of the install.
Please do not contact the company directly in regards to the group buy. The last thing I want is for them to get flooded with RFD'ers calling to inquire. As I stated, just post on here if you are interested, and once there are enough people interested, I will advise on the next steps.
If you have any specific questions in regards to any special requirements or requests for your vehicle, please pm me with the information, and I will find out and get back to you. Be sure to include your make, model, year, and details of the request.
The company information is listed below:
Lockdown Security
191 Nugget Ave Unit 3
Scarborough, Ontario
M1S 3B1
www.lockdownsecuritycanada.ca
Added: For anyone who ordered a Power Magic Box, there will be an additional $10 charge to the original $25 ($35 total) to have this installed. Please specify in your post if you need to have this installed instead of hard-wiring the camera.
PLEASE NOTE: this deal is valid for ANY type of Dash Cam. Brand does not matter, and neither does the make and model of the car. As long it is a standard camera that requires Power and Ground only, the install is universal and will be $25. Don't forget to mention in your post if you need multiple installs (eg. 2 separate vehicles)

I'm down as well ( 1 Camera / 1 Car ) .. I would like to know if it would be fine to hardwire this cam to the car without the power magic pro.. Let say I drive the car everyday but leave it on while parked at work (8 hrs) and at night time (10 hr).. will that drain the battery to a point where it will not start the car, just like as if someone left the doom light on?

Adding the twin 6" neons I wanna put in the foot well, they said it'd be about $150! I will want in on this if it's successful as a group buy! BTW, you think they could wire my neon lights as well for a little extra if not equal pricing?

I think he is hardwiring it so some ppl can take advantage of the parking mode. Some cars (myself included) the cigar lighter has no power after the engine is shut off.

Should be fine, depends on how strong your battery is.

One question. In Parking mode, does the camera have its own battery to record videos? Or does it have to be hardwired to the car battery to power the camera?

Depends on the car I guess. For mine (RSX) the a-pillar is held in place with a couple clips, the whole thing comes right off with a little pressure.

Guys, this is way easier than it seems. I might make a DIY install guide for this if I have time.
The power source has 2 wires, power and ground.
1. If you want the camera to run 24/7 with no interruptions, splice into a 12v constant source in your fuse panel inside the vehicle (min 30a, pref 40a).
2. If you want the camera to turn on and off with your cars ignition (no parking mode this way but also no risk of wearing battery down), you need to splice into a 12v switchable source.
The ground wire will just be attached to the closest body bolt on the car.
Even with option #1, you still run very little risk of draining the battery since it has intelligent recording meaning it only turns on when it senses something or is physically moved. Even so, it does have an internal battery to assist with this.
The only chance I can see this would wear out the battery is if you lived on a busy street (constant vehicles coming by) and left your vehicle parked for 1 week+. Otherwise, you'll be fine.

Thanks.
Your 335is has battery terminals under the hood as well, including a positive terminal bolt, and nearby ground that are already there for installations such as this. There is a wiring harness passthrough behind your glovebox through the firewall to feed the wire. Alternately he can tap into your fusebox using a piggyback harness on one of your mini-fuses and up the amperage rating which would be even easier.

Thanks for your interest everyone, I'm making a list to keep track.
So... the guy is mounting the camera, tries to hide the wires and plugging it into the cigar outlet for $25?
He is going to hardwire it to the battery or ignition (as stated in the original post).
And yes, this includes taking the pillar apart to hide the wires.
The only exception to this may be if the battery is in the trunk (more than half hour labour). I will call him shortly to find out how much that will be, but I don't anticipate it being too much more.
Keep em comin guys!
EDIT: as stated previously, there are power sources to tap in to at the front of the vehicle.

The process is practically the same for the power magic pro, so I will confirm that with him.
Can someone please confirm if the PMP has power and ground, and just plugs in to the cig plug of the camera?

It has 1 extra wire. 1 for ground, 1 for constant source of power, and 1 for a power source that only on when the ignition is on.

The power magic pro has 3 wires that goes into the fuse box. I think someone posted the instructions on the GB thread. It's actually quit easy.

For neon lighting, it is best to contact them directly. Let them know you are part of the group buy being set up for the dash cam install, and would like a quote on any other service.
Same goes for anybody else interested in other services by this company.

Okay folks,
I have confirmed the pricing with Lockdown for the Power Magic Pro Box. It will be an extra $10 to the original $25 to have the PMP installed.
This price MAY be lower depending on how many PMP's people actually ordered.
But as it stands:
$25 for the standard 2 wire camera only install
$35 for the 3 wire PMP install.
And to confirm, there will be NO extra labour for vehicles that have a battery in the rear.
I will be updating my original post to reflect this.

No all it does is monitor your battery voltage if you leave your car off and the camera running for an extended period of time. If the voltage dips below a certain amount, or if a certain amount of time passes, it shuts the camera off to prevent it from draining the battery any further. If you use your car frequently (every 48 hours or less), I wouldn't recommend buying this. Its a waste of money.

I don't believe this will use too much battery if it's hard wired in. Depending on the battery and age, it's safe to assume you can leave it on for 48 hours or more without it causing any drain issues.

One question. In Parking mode, does the camera have its own battery to record videos? Or does it have to be hardwired to the car battery to power the camera?
There is a battery built into the camera, but it will only run for a few seconds so the video file can be closed properly. The camera only functions normally off your car's battery (or another external source).
I don't believe this will use too much battery if it's hard wired in. Depending on the battery and age, it's safe to assume you can leave it on for 48 hours or more without it causing any drain issues.
The camera uses 4W peak. Most auto batteries would support this for days (if not weeks) with no problem.

Why do so many of you want the camera running while your car is parked?
All I can see it doing is MAYBE protecting against a hit and run/vandalism. But unlikely you'll ever get a license plate/face that you can track down...

A good quality 1080p dash cam should have no problem getting a license plate/face as evidence, it's definitely better than nothing.

Is there a specified time limit to when you'd have to get the installation done by?
I may get one or two. Potentially one for my current car, but I don't care much about that. I'd want one for a couple months down the road (like late summer) when I get a new car -- then I'd want the wire tucked away looking neat.

The install will be fully reversible with no permanent changes to the vehicle. There is no drilling and the process can be fully reversed.
Can I put you down for one? Id like to pay for yours if that's okay?

There is no set in stone time limit but I would say it won't extend past roughly 3 months after the installs start. So try and get the installs done as soon as the cameras come in. As for late summer, it is unlikely this will be honored so far down the road but i'm sure it will still be a reasonable price.

So you can pick up your camera (pm for pickup details), pay for the install, and schedule your appointment all in one shot.
A receipt WILL be provided for the pre-payment.
For those of you that were not able to get in to this group buy, the install rate will be honored for the next batch, however, pre payment will guarantee your install rate. Try to make it out to one of the Pickup Locations to make your Pre-Payment.
The Pick Up locations were provided in the email sent by Pintobean. If you are unsure, please PM me.
Finallu, please be sure to bring EXACT CHANGE as requested by the company.
Any questions can be directed to Mark directly at the pick up locations or by calling Lockdown Security at (647) 439-4485
Thanks.
How about the people who will pick up in downtown or already picked up? How are they going to pay for the installation? Is there any other way to do it beside the Markham and Mississauga pickup location?

Are they mounting it in such a way that i can just take it off myself and return the leased car? I wouldn't care about leaving whatever wires they have running inside the car.

The install is fully reversible for leased vehicles, there should be no permanent changes made during the install.
The camera itself is mounted using the double sided tape tabs that come with the camera, and that is removable when it's time to return the vehicle.

Somebody at today's meet in Mississauga asked that exact question... Mark said they can do either method, but prefer the wire-tap over the fuse-tap. I presume this is because a wire-tap is easier and probably less time-consuming to do.
I asked Mark if going with the wire-tap method would cause me issues when it was time to return my leased company car, and he said they would simply undo the connection and cover the spliced area with electrical tape. He mentioned that the wiring on most cars is covered in rolls of electrical tape anyways, so it was unlikely that anyone would be able to spot where the connection had been, let alone raise any concerns about the splicing job.
Mark also said that they would cut into the unit's cigarette adaptor plug when installing the cam, so if you had an issue with that, then it would be wise to go purchase another cigarette adaptor plug from any hobby store.

Got my blackvue installed today. I saw wires getting spliced and tape up. They hid all the wiring really well and mounted the camera behind the rearview mirror for me. Really good service, I just drove there and gave them my keys with the receipt and it was done before I knew it.

It took me 45 mins to neatly tucked into the pillars. I used cig socket though. Most people are probably wiring it to the fuse or something. That's why.

Some of us went to lockdown but I believe you're looking for this link (http://forums.redflagdeals.com/auto-links-blackvue-professional-installation-book-your-appt-now-25-00-a-1153831/) from autolinks?

Is there a concensus as to the best way to connect the cam to the windshield ? tape/sticky/velcor ...etc?
BluePhirePB
Apr 3rd, 2012, 01:11 PM
I still think the provided sticky is best.
On a different note, does anyone know if it's easy to change the way the dash cam is wired to the car? Reason I ask is because I got my cam wired at Autolinks ($25 + tax in about 45 minutes) and I didn't specify enough about how I wanted it wired. I said I wanted it wired to the ignition but what I really meant was to the ON position so when I crank the key one notch, it turns on with the clock and radio rather than full ACC on. It was completely my mistake for not being specific and Autolinks did a fabulous job. John was really nice and his team do wonderful work.
Anyways, is it easy to change or should I just wait until I get my second cam and mention it to them while they wire my rear cam?

...I said I wanted it wired to the ignition but what I really meant was to the ON position so when I crank the key one notch, it turns on with the clock and radio rather than full ACC on...
I'm confused as to why you want your cam wired that :arrowu: way.
The way I see it, there should really only be two options when hard-wiring the cam: you have it connected to a wire or fuse that receives constant power, even when the car is not running (dome light, power locks), or you have it connected to a wire or fuse that only receives power when the car is running (power windows, headlights).
It seems that your current setup is the second option listed above in that the cam only receives power when the car is running. You are contemplating switching things so that the cam receives power when the key is turned one notch, and the car is simply using battery power (neither running nor "off").
Why do you want that? Do you often sit in your car with the clock and radio on, but the engine not running? Where do you do this and why do you want it to be recorded?

Why do you want that? Do you often sit in your car with the clock and radio on, but the engine not running? Where do you do this and why do you want it to be recorded? The unit takes around 40 seconds to boot up so I'd rather have just radio/clock/cam powered up instead of having everything powered up or car idling for 40 seconds. More importantly however is say I'm a witness to an accident OR I'm involved in a collision (scam or not) and I get out of my car for a period of time, I want to the camera to be continually rolling without having my car running after the incident happens.
pintobean
Apr 4th, 2012, 12:53 PM
:arrowu:
In that case, I think you should have had the cam hardwired to a constant power source. That would eliminate the 40 second start up time, because the cam would always be running. You would just need to unplug your cam if you didn't want it to be recording. And in the case of an incident or accident, the constant power would allow you to leave the car and take your keys with you and know that the cam was still recording, as opposed to your current setup where you have to leave your keys in the car's ignition to ensure continuous recording.
I should point out that at least one user has reported a slightly faster startup time after upgrading to the latest firmware, so you may want to consider that... I think a faster microSD card might be beneficial as well. I haven't tried either of these methods (yet), but I will report back if I notice any changes after upgrading firmware and trying my class 10 card.

Thanks Rene! I'll give the firmware upgrade a shot later tonight. I don't want the direct battery wiring since I don't need it to record continuously. I just like being able to activate the camera separately from having to start the car. If I still find it bothersome after a few weeks, I'll probably get them to rewire it the same way the cigarette lighter is wired along with the second/rear cam I plan on getting.

i don't imagine its very hard as all you would need to do is get a spare cable (or use the existing cigarette cable) and splice power into map light etc. the only reason i would pay the $25+$10 for power box installation is because i don't feel like taking apart my dash and head liner.

I like Lockdown's service. They were fast, professional and did a good job. Bonus points for turning away a customer who came in before me who did not book an appointment. It wasn't to install a dash cam, but to do some other work. They could have easily made me wait, but didn't.
I'll use them again to install the Itronics... whenever that comes in.

Are they still doing this? By this weekend I'll get my hands on a LUKAS LK-7900 Ace... and a Power Magic Pro Plus (The plus version supplies power to 2 cams). So LUKAS in the front and ITRONICS in the back.
This is probably a little more difficult of an install, so I'm sure it'll cost a little more to install.

Even with a full description, pictures and even links to where to buy it from... my cousin in Korea screwed up getting the wrong cam and the wrong power cord! I couldn't have made this more idiot-proof.... oh well. If the deal is stil on, then I'll book to install the wrong cam and the wrong power cord to my parents' car.
