Davy Jones of the Monkees has died of an apparent heart attack aged 66. The singer had been on a solo tour this month and had complained of chest pains the previous evening and was admitted to a hospital in Stuart Florida.
Jones was born in Manchester, England and started acting as a child, though he got his big break in 1965 when he joined The Monkees. The group had a hugely successful television series, and a slew of hit songs in the late 1960s. At their peak in 1967 they sold more records than the Beatles.

So he died of a heart attack while sitting in a hospital bed?
You'd think we'd take better care of our celebrities. You're telling me that instant access to an entire hospital of medical technology can't bring a 66-year-old back from a cardiac event?

I hope it is not "Monkey see, Monkey do!"

The Monkees were a big part of my childhood. We wore the grooves out of many of their 45's. Sad to hear he is gone. May Davy RIP.

Was shocked to hear this. I was trying out some new Playbook software (Sound Hound and Shazam) that anayzes music and lets you know what it is. Tuned into Sirius satellite radio on my satellite receiver and found this out. Very sad. The Monkees were a big part of growing up back in the 1960's (along with a great many other groups). Big tribute on the 60's Sirius channel right now. People like Ron Dante (The Archies) have been on to give some interesting stories. I hope they repeat this at 3am as I missed the first 90 minutes...

As a child of the 80's I remember the monkees being on muchmusic all the time back then. I really liked the show. 66 seems to young to die. I also agree if you have a heart attack in a hospital, you would thing the equipment and staff would easily accessible to resolve it (unless it was a really serious heart issue).

Didn't Anna Nicole Smith's son die at the Bahamas hospital she was a patient in? It all seemed very odd to me. Apparently her gold-digging lawyer was present at the time. He later lost the child custody case (no doubt trying to get his hands on all her money).
Anyway, sad news about Davy. Just like the Beatles, I think the Monkees have lost 2 members now. Amazingly enough, despite the huge record sales at the time (and since) and ongoing broadcasts none of the members made a lot of money from the show. Seems even Davy Jones never became a millionaire, and lived in a modest house in Florida at the time of his death. He did have a wife half his age though, and seemed to live a content life. (BTW, one of the other Monkees was rich though - his mother invented white-out).
RIP Davy. Hope the TV execs at least look after the funeral expenses. No doubt they'll find ways to cash in over the next few months.
(BTW, I heard he died at a horse farm he ran).

The rest of the Monkees are alive, fyi. It was Michael Nesmith's father who invented white out.

No, it was his mother who invented it. (Bette Nesmith)
