COLOMBO, SRI LANKA—A Sri Lankan man has died while trying to set a record for the longest time spent buried alive, police said Monday.
Police said Janaka Basnayake, 24, buried himself over the weekend with the help of family and friends in a trench sealed with wood and soil in the town of Kantale, about 220 kilometres north of Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. A local newspaper reported that the trench was 3 metres deep.
Basnayake was buried at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said that when he was brought to the surface at 4 p.m., he was unconscious and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.Source: http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/1140945--man-dies-trying-to-set-record-for-longest-time-buried-alive
Ok, I know this post is about a news article but really, what was this guy thinking (not thinking) by trying to break the record of this feat?
It just boggles the mind...
I equate this to something like "setting the record of surviving the most bullets shot at body"...I mean come on, use some common sense!
Sorry just thought I would share when I read this article, I was thinking "wtf".....is this even a record?

Here's another article that answers your questions:
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/man-buried-alive-dies-set-world-record-article-1.1033193?localLinksEnabled=false
The man's mother, LD Leelawathi, said her son was fond of doing bizarre stunts since he was a boy, according to the Lankadeepa newspaper.
Basnayake tried the same stunt before, his mother said. Once he was buried alive for two and a half hours, another time for six hours.
Guinness World Records does not list a record for being buried alive.
A British man claimed to have set a record for being buried underground for three months in 1998. However, Guinness would not recognize it at the time because it did not want to encourage dangerous stunts, BBC News reported.

Guinness World Records introduced a policy years ago that it will not recognise records that would be an immediate danger to a person's life.
In order to discourage people from dying while attempted to break records..
Guess this fellar didn't get the memo.

I assume that they were supposed to dig him up after 7 minutes, NOT 7 hours! Someone should have double-checked that minor detail....

Probably because he's Singhalese not Tamil.

it's all good, there is a ready made grave and everything, dying for doing what you loved is a good way to die, all is well with the world.

How ironic.
He buries himself in the hopes of gaining fame, and dies in the process, probably gaining more recognition that he could have ever dreamed.
Be careful what you wish for!

He still had a long way to go to match those Chilean miners, and even they may not necessarily have been the longest.

I wondered how they could tell how long he lasted before dying, but it turned out he was still barely there when they dug him up. Wonder if the wood supports gave way, or if he just ran out of air? A simple breathing tube could have saved him.

Okay....so they didn't even think of using something like a walky talky or bang on the coffin codes every 10 minutes to have the guy in the coffin communicate with the surface ppl to see if he's still okay and still wants to continue?

One probably already holds the record for longest surname.

A simple bang-bang-bang = "let me out!" should be enough. No need to complicate things.
