The other day I went to The Bay, found some polo shirt priced $25 from regular price $85. I liked it so I decided to put it aside with the cashier while I look for other stuff. When I came back 10 minutes later, the shirt was gone, the cashier didn't know what happened to it. So she went to pick up a new one to the shelf. I bought it, and when I got home I realized it wasn't the same size. I went back to the store, and there were no more shirts so I had to return mine. I talked to the manager who said she would talk to the cashier so this would not happen again. But...that doesn't help me at all. So, she offered me 15% discount on anything in the store.
15%? Seriously? Can't do any better? I know mark up for retail stores are probably around 200% or even more. so I got really upset pointing that my shirt was 70% off. She asked me to pick something else and she would see what she can offer me, but after the 15% offer, it sounds like I won't be getting any decent deal.

Another customer was listening to the conversation and he pointed he had the same issue happened to him before.
Anyone experienced anything like this before? Has someone complained and get something offered? I really feel like making some noise because of the bad customer service offered.

Considering they're under no obligation to offer anything, I'd suggest you take what they're offering. You're certainly not in a position to demand anything.

Most likely a helpful cashier likely put the item back on the shelf (or at least got it ready for same). Yeah, it's crappy and your time was wasted, but the reason these shirts were on sale was likely because they were clearing them out.

I know they are not obligated to do anything. Just thought a bad experience is usually compensated by something better than 15% (which is not even half of what a regular sale price is). So, I was pretty much wondering if someone have got a similar experience and got something better than that.

Why give it to the cashier to hold? Especially at the Bay. If it was something heavy, maybe, but if it was something heavy that was 70% off I would buy it quick and come back to shop for anything else. A polo you can throw over your shoulder for ten minutes, and buy when you are done shopping. This is a lesson learned, and I would take whatever the manager gives you.

They don't owe you anything. They are not there to hold your items because you don't feel like carrying them around.

You should have just carried the item around rather than have someone hold it for you. It is also your mistake not to check the size before purchasing the shirt. The cashier did not force you to purchase the wrong item, you didn't check the size.

for misplacing the shirt you didn't feel like carrying around and then purchasing a shirt you didn't bother to try on, I'd say, 15% is a pretty generous discount. be happy.

It doesn't matter what their markup is...they have no obligation to offer you any discount because you weren't able to complete a transaction successfully. When you find something you love at 70%, you cling to it like a dog on an ***** flavored biscuit and scurry out!

Someone probably picked it up while she was helping another customer. Either a staff member who didn't realize you were coming back and put it away, or a customer who thought it was a good deal and pinched it.

I wouldn't leave it with the cashier if it were me. They help other customers too... if they have to concentrate on something else for a few minutes.. your merchandise could go wherever.

Then you should definitely compensate the store more than 15% for their troubles. They did nothing wrong. You left some merchandise unattended on a retail cash counter for 10 minutes or so, according to your first post. I wonder how many times that very same cashier is asked..."can you hold these for a couple of minutes?", only to have the customer not return. After 5 minutes or so, a clerk rightly thought the shirt was unattended and unwanted.

And yes, they were clearing them out.
See if they're available at another location, otherwise you're out of luck.

Wow. The cashier tried to help you out because you were too lazy to carry around a shirt and not only do you demand compensation but you have the nerve to post here complaining. And people wonder why store staff are getting more and reluctant to help out customers. Who needs the aggravation.

What did you expect her to do stand there and guard it? You do realize that she has a job to do and watching a shirt that a customer may or may not come back to purchase, isn't part of it. If you really wanted it, you would have held on to it.

OP, next time make sure to take your Mommy with you so that she can act as your merchandise mule.

Or, wait. Better yet, get a basket or cart to put it in! What a novel idea!

The biggest mistake. You know it is a good deal and you didn't want to watch it like a hawk yourself.
2nd mistake, you did not check the size when the cashier brought you another one. Do you really expect she would know your size?
Try taking care your own business next time.

You should never expect more than an apology & coaching when human error is involved. Expecting (or worse, demanding) anything more, especially financial compensation, makes you sound like an entitled ***** .

I'm actually surprised and impressed that they even offered you 15% off. Yes, you lost a good deal by no fault of your own (though arguably you shouldn't have done that in the first place), but to be honest, it was not their fault either. They have no obligation to 'hold on' to anything for anybody.

This does not reflect bad customer service at all. This is top tier stuff.

The Bay doesn't seem to offer much for their high prices. Having a concierge type service (top tier) would offer something but the service there really isn't better than at Wal-Mart.

Frankly that's why anything self service I can do I ususally do.

That's really weird. The other day I was at the Bay, and as I was paying for something else, I saw a nice shirt behind the counter, and asked the clerk if I could look at it. Turns out it was my size, and I bought it.

x2...Yeah, how hard is it to carry it. Talk about being lazy and the OP is actually blaming the store.

I know human errors happen, and well unfortunately this time to me.
IMO you don't offer to hold it, if you can't do it properly.

Thanks for the constructive answers, and ..well..thanks I guess for all the other ones making funny comments about it lol...

Whoever is in charge of this section can close the thread as I won't be following it anymore.

not sure how you calculated that 15% is not enough that they are making 200%.
do you realize that items that are on shelves are loosing their value ...that employees must get paid.rent must get paid..etc
there are lots expenses for big stores like the bay .so even if they do mark up 200% after they pay all the fixed fees , there is not much left.i would take 15% fee and stop complaining for no reason.if you wanted that polo so much should keep it in your basket.

I would submit the error was caused by you, not to you.

One day you'll figure it out.

Good luck on future shopping trips.
