I am currently working in the headoffice of a major grocery retailer and have been offered a job by a direct competitor (Walmart). Is my employer able to terminate my employment once I give my letter of resignation (2 weeks) even if my new position is in a different capacity than the one with my current employer? I have heard this happen to other people, but I'm pretty low on the totem pole so I'm thinking hypothetical.

Yes, it happened to me at my first job. Well actually they told me to finish all my projects by the end of the week and GTFO. At which point i just left.

Banks will do this if you are leaving for another FI ..... and they'll pay the 2 weeks out

Sure are able to! As long as they pay you in lieu of notice. How long you been there for?

Don't know how many jobs you've had, but companies are getting creative these days and will find ways around paying you by making the termination a grey area like mine was. It makes it more of a hassle than it's worth to get your money and usually people don't know their rights anyway. Companies will do whatever they can get away with.

They may do it but they typically pay you for the 2 weeks period. If you do decide to move then be sure that the references and background checks are complete before you resign.
