Doing a bit research about government jobs for my dad. He's been out of work and needs to find something but its hard because he is an immigrant in his 50s. There is not too much out there without post-secondary education unfortunately and our family needs him to have something to help support us.
I've read that jobs at the LCBO pay well but they aren't easy to come by if you want to work there in a full time position. I was looking at their website and it appears as though they take on seasonal workers in the summer season. Is there a possibility for him to take a seasonal position and hope to get a part-time or full-time job there?
Was also wondering about bank teller jobs. Is it common for those positions to be filled by someone his age?
I was also thinking it may be good for him to take a non-skilled position in a hardware store like home depot, anywhere really where its common for older folks to work those retail positions.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Depending on how urgent he needs it/how hard he's willing to work (at first mostly, but overall too), research being a truck driver. He almost certainly has to start as a long-haul to build experience, but eventually he could get a stable local position.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Has anyone had any experience working for the LCBO?

It's actually the other way around.

In my area there is 10 long haul jobs for every city job, if we are talking about class one rig license. The real demand is for 10 hour runs (back and forth) these are reserved for the guys with most seniority.
Class three is a completely different story, which might be a good idea for the OPs father, maybe a school bus driver.

We live in Toronto, not sure what the demand is like for school bus drivers here since our schools don't use them. Would it be possible to point me to a link about transportation jobs? I have a younger sibling as well that he looks after so a long haul job might be out of the question.

yeah contact Stock Transportation: http://www.stocktransportation.com/JoinOurTeam/tabid/57/Default.aspx
FirstStudent Canada: http://www.firststudentcanada.com/First-Canada-jobs
Or he could obtain a security guard license and work as that for the meantime, he would get 40 hrs per week but the shifts could be night shifts or afternoons, depending on the company he works for or whatever is available.......good job for anyone just looking for something while they search for their career job.
If he is willing, get help from Ontario Works to get him trained as a DZ truck operator, there are plenty of day jobs driving the dump-size trucks in the GTA
Good Luck....
