Usually they pro-rate for the number of days you didn't use. However, the day you called to switch may not be the day it actually happened. It can take up to a week to transfer over a number. It doesn't matter how many minutes you used, what matters is when the transfer and cancellation occurred. If you have cable, or are getting cable, you can probably work out a deal to waive the cancellation fees and get some of the billing period back.

The secret is to complain and escalate the problem. But you have to appear that you are still going to be their customer or that they are losing a customer because of the way they treated you.

The transfer was complete on the day i called for the transfer. They said once everything is complete the telus machine will send a txt saying the transfer is completed which it was sent on the same day on transfer. the number was fully functional on my new provider, was able to make incoming and outgoing calls and txt.

Unlike landlines, cell phone ports usually take only a couple hours max, and usually only about 10 minutes.

Sorry OP but you're on the hook for that one. Your agreement with Rogers has a stipulation that you have to give them 30 days notice to cancel your line unless you're on prepaid service. When you ported your number over to Telus, that's the start of your 30 days notice which means they can charge you for 30 days of service starting from the day they get your cancellation notice even if you ported out and you're not using their service anymore.

There's a way around it, detailed in this RFD thread (http://forums.redflagdeals.com/do-not-pay-rogers-fidos-30-days-services-when-porting-number-1000126/). But it's a bit of work and you'll have to really fight for it. Unfortunately since you've already ported out from Rogers to Telus, it's too late for you and there's nothing you can do about it now. You can try calling Rogers and make a huge fuss about it, you might get lucky but you really don't have any leverage.
