priceline , bid on HOBOKEN, NJ $80 to $100 range and you should get either Hyatt or Westin .. all 10 minutes PATH train ride to Manhattan (PATH train station walking distance to hotel).

Are you flexible with dates? Prices go up and down in nyc. last two times I got what I thought were pretty good deals. One on hotwire, $165 a night for The New Yorker hotel. Hotel was very decent and location for us was good. It is not in times square (I would never want to stay there). The hotel was classified as 3.5 star and I think its in the Chelsea district.

Before that got an incredible deal with travelocity's "mystery hotel", but the next time I couldn't find the same deal so went with hotwire instead.

It's cheaper to stay in Jersey City and its very esay to take the train across, but when I searched, it was not significantly cheaper enough to warrant the extra hassle, maybe like only $25 cheaper per night (but the hotel would probably be bigger and nicer).

There were cheaper places in Jersey but its more inconvenient to get to NYC so I did not explore further. Some recommend secaucus nj as one such area.

Edit: Actually I remembered wrong...for my second trip I used priceline and actually won a bid in Jersey City at the Westin. Price was $130/night. Ended up getting my order cancelled because there was a strong hurricane warning for the area. Ended up going to NYC anyways a day after the storm and thats when I stayed at The New Yorker with hotwire. So I would have saved $35/night staying in jersey city, but the extra train rides would cost maybe $10/day for a couple.

thanks guys. not really flexible with dates as going for a family function. but will try those ideas. I've been checking hotwire daily. chelsea area would be perfect. it's between where my family lives and where the function is.

You could do a lot worse than AirBNB.

When I went in February we went to the Milford Plaza. They were offering $99 /night to introduce their newly renovated rooms. Don't know if the promo is still running but I found it to be decent and in a great location!

Sweet deal. Where did you find the deal? Directly on their website or on expedia-style site?

When are you going and how many of you are there? I would only use Priceline if there are 2 or less to a room as all they guarantee is a room that sleeps 2 people and rooms in NY can be very small. And if you go on tripadvisor.com you get warned in the forum about renting apartments (VRBO) for two reasons - first that a lot of the ads are scams and second that it is illegal in the vast majority of buildings in Manhatten for any rental to be less than 30 days.
You should post what you are looking for on the tripadvisor NY forum as I have received great advice there.

Check out travelzoo.com - they always seem to have some NY hotel deals as well as discounts for shows. I just cleaned out my inbox and know I deleted some NY hotel discount emails (I love NY and subscribe to a lot of sites that offer deals). If I receive any new ons in the next couple of days I will post.

Oooh, long weekends can be tough. I would reserve the best cancelable deal on a hotel that you can find right now just in case prices rise you do have somewhere to stay. I checked my cheap go-to hotel, the Red Roof Inn on 32nd, which I have got for as low as $99 before but it's over $200 a night for your dates.
Have you tried any hotels in the financial/Wall street area? It's a little south but sometimes they have better prices for weekend stays.
