View Full Version : Fying at home?

I haven't done much cooking at home that requires the use of a decent amount of oil for "deep frying" something.
What's the best way to do this to avoid using too much oil/having too much splatter? A frypan or a pot? Something else?
Also what would be the best way to dispose of the leftover oil. Is there any way to re-use it later if you were to fry something else?

If you don't need to fry a lot, or it is small, use a smaller pot so you get the same depth you need without so much oil.
As for reusing it, you can filter it, save it, and use it again a few times. To dispose...I just put it in a jar or container and throw it in the garbage....

i use a wok for all my frying.
after frying, i strain it, and use it again a few times.
when it's no longer useable, you can put it in a large ziploc bag and freeze it and throw it away.

As far as disposing it is concerned, it depends on the amount. If it's only a small amount, I'll mix it with my compost and place it in the bin in my backyard. If it's a large amount, I soak it in stale bread and leave it outside in a can for the squirrels/birds to eat.

I used to fry in my kitchen but the chore of cleaning outweigh the need for it. Whenever I have to fry, I do it during summer in the outdoor.

Ya, it kind of sucks when you just want to do it one-off/irregularly. But sometimes what you want to make calls for that need! :(

What about that new fryer small appliance from TFal ?
Requires just a very small amount of oil and voila - presto - done & healthy. If you fry often I think it may be worth looking into this new product.

It's a very expensive option (249+). I'm personally considering it though, I'm not a fan of the massive grease smell after using a regular deep fryer

There are plenty of ways to 'deep fry' with a pot, but just make sure that it wont be a one-time thing, because there will always be oil left when done. I made a fish sandwich yesterday (I was tempted to go to McD's for a Fillet-o-Fish, but opted not to), oil in pot, splatter mesh wire on top, and let it fry. Thankfully the weather is nice so I opened all the windows in the house so there was no lingering oil smell later in the evening.
There are plenty of YouTube guides on how to deep fry with minimal oil in pots, I found it very useful when experimenting.
Have fun and good eats :D
