rehan, it makes no sense for it to become a canadian holiday if it was only celebrated by persians and kurds!! think about it.

rehan, it makes no sense for it to become a canadian holiday if it was only celebrated by persians and kurds!! think about it. I wasn't serious, obviously. But many things that come out of Kenney's and Harper's mouths make no sense. :D Kenney even said in his statement that it's a day for all Canadians to reflect....
But on a serious note, it's nice to see the gov't recognize the occasions important to Canadians of various cultural backgrounds -- http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/statements/2012/index.asp
Nowruz mubarak. :)

I always thought that the spring equinox makes for a more logical start to the new year
- based on my northern hemisphere bias
this is where life starts anew after the end of the dead cold winter months.

It's not only celebrated by them. My wife is ismaili Muslim and this is their new year today, she's not Kurdish or Persian

My wife is ismaili Muslim and this is their new year today, she's not Kurdish or PersianAlot of Ismailis trace their origin to Pamir region (currently split between Afghanistan and Tajikistan), which had long been part of Persian cultural universe, so your wife's ancestors might be from there too.
