Planning on going to Las Vegas. I would like to know what areas to avoid and places I must visit.
I have been hearing that there are some seedy (bronx) areas that I should avoid. I am planning on looking at areas beyond the strip, but am unsure how safe various areas will be.
Any tips?

Not sure there are any other good places to visit in Las Vegas outside of the strip. I know there is the Fremont experience in downtown las vegas but it wasn't too fun when I went.

The strip and the area immediately around the strip are generally fine, as is downtown (Freemont Street). I walked from the strip to Freemont Street on my last trip to Vegas and felt fine.
What sort of areas away from the strip do you want to explore/why?

He's looking for special services in Clark County...
But you don't need to go that far...pick a phone...ask a cabbie...pick up a flyer....they will come to you...
you don't need to go to them

Since this sounds like your first time, the strip and Freemont Street is all you need. Lots of things to do and see in these two areas. Freemont will seem like a shady area crawling with crusties but there should be enough people/police presence that nothing will happen. I even walked from Freemont back to the strip at 1 AM and nothing happened... wasn't planned but I thought it was much closer, which I realized it wasn't.

I personally would avoid venturing too far off Fremont street (day or night) if you plan on visiting downtown - especially has a first-time visitor.

Goodwill (thrift shopping) and the large supermarkets. Those are not on the strip. Also heard that the cheap eats are outside the strip. The strip gouges you when it comes to restaurants from what I hear.
Still remember Disneyland. The supermarkets food prices seemed overpriced in the area. I wonder if it is cheaper outside the Disneyland area.
A friend told me the gun store allows people to shoot machine guns, tommy guns, etc for a fee at targets. Sounds like fun, but outside the strip.

The Gun Store is a super common Las Vegas destination, located east of the airport a few KM off Las Vegas Blvd, you'll probably want to take a cab if you're not a fan of long walks in the desert heat.
In terms of Goodwill shopping, (as you've already mentioned) take serious consideration of the neighbourhood you're going into, you'll probably want take a cab again.
You can eat for cheap on the strip if you want, there's lots of info in the Las Vegas thread about how to do it. There's a few Walgreens located just a block or two off the strip with reasonable prices, depending on what you're looking for they may serve your needs just fine.
