Nobody flies directly to Laos. Find a flight that goes to Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok and then fly to Laos from there (possibly dirt cheap with Air Asia though there are other cheap Asian airlines).

+1 I did this 2 years ago. YYZ to Bangkok via Helsinki on Finnair (it was the cheapest at the time) then a cheap Air Asia flight from Bangkok.

Alternatively - if flights from BKK or KUL to Vientiane are full/expensive, consider flying into Udon Thani. It is only about 40 minutes from the border with Laos, and you can take cheap domestic flights to Udon Thani (on say - Nok Air) from Bangkok.

Depending on what all you want to see, you should fly into Vientiane and then fly out of Luang Prabang (or vice versa or even better just go to Luang Prabang).

If you do go to Vientiane then you could also take an overnight train to Bangkok to save some money. Check out http://www.seat61.com/Laos.htm for info on the train.

Where in Laos? LP? Vientaine?

We flew from Chiang Mai to LP on Lao Airlines (link) (http://www.laoairlines.com/). About 40 mins by turbo-prop. Otherwise it would have been an overnight bus ride... or a 2 day boat ride connecting thru (i believe) Chiang Rai.

Air Asia flies into Vientaine, but from KL only. Lao Airlines has more options from other SE Asian cities.

Lao Air is somewhat expensive, compared to other carriers. This is all relative, of course, but I would fly into Bangkok and then onto Vientiane via Air Asia. I flew from Siem Reap in Luang Prabang, and the flight was with Lao Air and around $250. As others have suggested, LP is really the jewel in Laos. But if I were going, I'd go further north into Nong Kiaw and Phongsaly as well. I thought Southern Laos was pretty boring, and the 4000 islands were relaxing and cheap, but no comparison to nicer beaches in Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam.

Only Air Asia flight for Laos is Kuala Lumpur-Vientiane.

If you're flying to Bangkok, you might as well take the sleeper train (as somone suggested above) to Nong Khai. From there it's like a 2 min ride to the border and another half hour into Vientiane. We did the opposite journey (Vientaine-Nong Khai-Bangkok) last fall, about 780 bhat (around CAD 25) for second class lower bunk. Upper bunk is a few bhat cheaper, but you don't get a window...
