I am looking to open a current account to be used by me and my boyfriend for paying joint bills.

We do not want a full shared account, with both our pays going in, but rather an account where we can both automatically put a few hundred dollars in each month and use this to pay our bills.

I was going to go with the ING Thrive, for the $100 bonus, but they say that an automatic transfer every month does not count as payroll. I also might be leaving my job soon so I do not want to complicate things by asking them to split up my payroll to go to different places.

Any idea what the best deal would be for an account like this?

I wanted to add that since this is basically a money in, money out account, I am looking for the best sign up promo like the ING promo.

AFAIK there are only two institutions that offer free no-fee chequing accounts, ING Direct and PC Financial. If ING doesn't work for you, try PCF. (ING Direct isn't totally free either because, unlike PCF, they charge for blank cheques. I suppose $100 will buy a lot of blank cheques, if you write a lot.)

Other options are bank accounts that offer free transactions if you keep a minimum balance, e.g. $2,000, but I suspect that's not of interest. Some banks, like TD/CT, sometimes have promos where they'll give you a bonus to open an account, etc. but again, those accounts will have fees.

Maybe PC F plus a joint PC MC that earns points redeemable at Loblaws/Zehrs?
