Hey, I didnt want to create a useless thread, but since most of you have the nexus s I realized that my phone runs out of better quite quickly than it should be. I wouldnt be able to keep my phone on from 7am to 4pm without it hitting on 10% mark..... is it because of the ICS update? IM currently on 4.0.3 with mobilicity.

If you're not really using your phone much, then yes that's the battery issue some people see with 4.0.3. What is the "time on" for the screen?

All the major custom ROMs should have updated to 4.0.4 by now.

People still use stock ROMs on Android? That defeats the purpose of having Android.

Can't wait any longer .... Mobilicity ...

I don't know why some people wait for this.

I upgraded to the official NS 4.0.4 ROM manually today. Many hobbyists have written very simple instructions for the whole process.

Everything you need to know is here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445570). Basically, one would look under "Incremental Updates" for the appropriate official incremental update zip, save it to your sd card folder, back up the whole phone, reboot the phone to recovery and then choose "load zip from sd card". Did I say backup the whole phone?

To unroot the thing, I used One Click Root from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544940). Also, let me say that it's important to backup the whole phone first. ;)

Actually, a "basic port of leaked stock IMM26(4.0.4) rom for crespo4g", has been available since February 1, here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474878). I tried this 4.0.4 ROM for a while, but didn't like it because my battery lasted only 5-6 hours. I'm gonna see if the official ROM for the NS deserves the 2 month wait...

People still use stock ROMs on Android? That defeats the purpose of having Android.

Yeah I use Nexus S stock + Zeam Launcher. I try the custom ROMs but none of them have impressed me enough to switch. Also it's easier to get tech support from devs when you're stock.

The dialer looks different, including a 100% bigger dial button (not shown).

http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/9916/screenshot2012040302532.png

Other than this, according to various people, the changes were related to performance -- a better battery life, a more responsive launcher, and smoother animations.

If you haven't got the update yet, can you post what version of the phone you have? If yo don't know you can find out by using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.cbruegg.officialupdate

And if you have the update installed, were you on yakju previously? Just trying to find out if yakjuux (regional canadian baseband version) has received any updates anywhere.

Let me know of a smartphone platform that gives me a choice of phones, has a large app base, and has customizations (widgets, themes, etc) *MINUS* the custom ROM options, and I will swap my phone for that.

Your comment is like saying everyone who buys a router that supports Tomato or DD-WRT should start flashing their firmware or buy a different router.

That just forces the system check to occur NOW. Otherwise the system will still do periodic checks. Doing the Check In doesn't mean that you will get the OTA. You just got lucky on your 4th try. If you didn't do the 4th check in, you would have gotten in in a few hours anyways when the system does its periodic check in.

Also with ICS (those on 4.0.1/2/3 and waiting for this .4, you can just click on Check Now in the System Updates screen)

Can someone knowledgeable here confirm whether or not the time you get an NS or GN update has ANYTHING TO DO with your carrier or with Samsung?

Rogers, Fido, Telus, Wind or Mobilicity have nothing to do with when you get it, right? Or ya mean somehow Rogers is first in line!? Or Telus is delaying the update?!

hakira
Apr 3rd, 2012, 05:44 PM
if you are on yakju then google directly updates your phone, and if you are on yakjuux samsung pushes the update out. So yakjuux will always be slower since they have to get the update from google, add whatever regional modifications are needed and then push it out using their own servers, not google's.

Carriers do nothing, this is evidenced by phones being able to get OTA's in airplane mode with wifi on or without a sim card at all over wifi.

so I did the steps on my Nexus S (Unlocked, originally Koodo I think)
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Apps -> All -> Clear Data, then *#*#checkin#*#* step
about 3-4 times and got the download (ICS 4.0.4 128.6MB)... downloaded and rebooted the phone, but now it's stuck in a WHITE triangle + Exclamation mark + Green Android robot (boot screen?) for the last 20-30 minutes

should I do a battery pull? what can I do? I hope it didn't brick it

Thanks

UPDATE:
I did 2 battery pulls, and phone would boot up with old 2.3.6 (at least it didn't brick)
so I watched it install again and the "unboxing image" turned into Exclamation mark screen about 20% in, with no error message whatsoever
I gave up for now... my last X10 update didn't go well either, not too trusting in Android OTA update now, ha

Well, I'll be damned.

There's possibly some correlation to this clear data and/or repeated checkins. I tried this days ago, to prove a point, and my point was proven, it didn't work. Today, because of all the claimed successes, I tried again. 3 consecutive tries and the update came. However, this is not a clear indicator that this method is valid, since my buddy's been trying all morning and nothing. It could still be a coincidence or perhaps repeated checkins is enough to do something and that the clear data does nothing, who knows. I can't fathom how WHEN a device gets its updates is dictated by the device and not the server. I can only conclude that it's worth a try.

Have a Mobilicity Nexus S - just got a message about Android System Update 4.0.4 ICS OTA update. Didn't power off the phone or anything this week. :)

So this is like almost 5 months later. Pretty sad when compared to how Apple handles its OS across the iDevice board. I'm satisfied with the Nexus S but it's the last Google flagship phone I'll be buying since getting timely updates was supposedly a great selling point. I gave up Galaxy S2 for this. If Google can't even tame its own phones I'll take a chance on any high end phone from a third party.

I had the same problem. Your phone must have had some kind of mod done to it, like clockwork recovery installed over the stock recovery. Apparently, the OTA update will stop if it detects anything other than full stock condition. Your only option is manual update. Here you go.

I'm a bit late to this thread. I've got a Rogers google nexus S (i9020a). It's still on Android 2.3.6. Is it considered "safe" to use the methods mentioned earlier in this thread to force the update to ICS 4.0.4?

Or do I just wait and hope that Rogers pushes out the update sometime this decade...

For those Nexus S on 2.3.6, I noticed that after checkin, you also need to go into the system update and check there. Did this on my wife's phone about 20 times before I decided to go into the system update and there it was. On my 4.0.3 it popped up after doing the multiple checkins, no need for the system update.

I'd be interested if someone just did multiple checkins (and go into system update if required) without doing the data deletion. I wonder if its like a lottery (say 1 in 10 checkins get the update) which is why doing multiple checkins increases the odds. (Because I still don't believe deleting the data does anything) :)

Answer to your question is yes and no. It is very difficult to "brick" your phone. However, if you don't follow instructions properly, the install will not happen as you expect. It is kind of like re-installing windows on a PC. Here is a link to the factory images and instructions.

https://code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html#instructions

Does the update wipe out your apps and data if you apply it manually?

I'm still not having any luck getting the OTA despite trying all the different suggestions.

Yeah, it does. You can restore your apps pretty quick. Your google account keeps track of all that. There are market apps that do backups.

Apparently, Wind is getting the OTA update for ICS:

http://www.androidcentral.com/wind-mobile-nexus-s-getting-its-ics-update-ota

Wind customers with a Samsung Nexus S should get ready for the big OTA to Ice Cream Sandwich, as it appears to be rolling out now. AC reader Vic Singh tweeted in to let us know that his Nexus S was updating, and we knew that you guys would want to know. You'll need to be stock, with the stock recovery to accept the update (unlocked boot loaders are OK), and make sure your battery is charged up -- it takes a lot of the precious juice.

Not as impressed as I'd hoped. In terms of performance, it's about the same as GB. The screen rotation wasn't working until I rebooted. Curious to see how battery life will change when I use it more.

Anybody know how to disable the TV sleep animation when you put the phone to sleep? Also, is there a good alternative to noLED? The new version seems to want to know everything - read your SMS, Gtalk, Gmail, contacts, etc...

Unlock before you upgrade. The new OS might lock your bootloader. I installed the new vanilla 4.0.4 but reverted back to 4.0.2 on my Galaxy Nexus

4.0.2/4.0.4 should have substantially better battery life compared to 4.0.1

For me, the top reason for rooting your NS and GN is being able to back it up. I have lost a phone once and another time, a kid threw it into water. Learned my lesson.

I am disappointed to see so many people don't back up their phone:

Yeah, it does. You can restore your apps pretty quick. Your google account keeps track of all that.

Your google account does keeps track of all that's installed, and it will reinstall those apps quickly. HOWEVER ALL YOUR DATA AND SETTINGS ON THOSE APPS ARE LIKELY GONE. For example, unless you ran a backup app and backed it up, your SMS MESSAGES are DEFINITELY GONE.

There are non-root apps of backing up your SMS (SMSBackupRestore (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore) and SMSBackup+ (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en)). However, neither of them restores MMS messages. And while these two apps back up messages one by one, root-required backup apps back up the sms database in one go -- I don't know how many SMS messages you keep, a SMSBackupRestore restore takes me 3-5 hours.

I hope this helps someone and changes his mind about keep his phone backed up.

Screen Off and Lock (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en)

noLED needs all those permissions to do what you can ask it to do. For example, it has to access your SMS so that it can give you new SMS notifications. As per its FAQ (http://www.devasque.com/noled/FAQ.php#10), it "does not require the INTERNET permission therefore it cannot send any data out of your phone without your explicit approval." If my explanation doesn't address your permissions concern, I suggest you contact the dev ali@devasque.com .

I hope this helps.

Got my OTA update for Nexus S two days ago. I am on Wind.

Not sure which ICS version I had before, but battery life is definitely better with 4.04. Everything runs a little faster too. When I got the initial ICS update a few months ago (from Gingerbread), the new features were a nice upgrade but they definitely slowed down my phone to a moderately annoying level. Happy with the upgrade so far, happy I don't have to wait so long for things to load anymore.

The problem with the battery drainage was noLED. Everytime the icons blink, the CRT animation is activated, and it drains the battery really quickly. Still can't find a way to get rid of the CRT animation when the phone goes to sleep...

So is there a consensus regarding upgrading to 4.0.4 from 2.3.6? I got a notification today for my Nexus S (Fido) but have not upgraded yet as I'm worried about the increased battery usage. I read somewhere that doing a factory reset helps. Has anyone tried it?

lucky you (to get the update notification)! My Rogers Nexus S still hasn't gotten any upgrade notification and I badly want it :(

(without having to jump through the hoops that people in this thread have done)

edit: looks like i spoke too soon... about an hour after i posted this msg, the update starting coming down to my phone!

I wish someone uploads a video side by side comparison of GB 2.3.6 and ICS 4.0.4 performance on YouTube. All we hear, mfrania, are anecdotes. I can't give you a recommendation. :(

I will vouch for the factory reset though. I just did one last month. Indeed, if you have fewer saved SMSes, fewer contacts, fewer pics and fewer music, your dialer, your call log, and your Contacts, Messaging, Gallery and your Music apps WILL run faster.

I hope this helps.

To be honest, I'm happy with Gingerbread simply because I have no idea what I'm missing from ICS and if there's a chance the battery life will worsen, I can wait for 4.0.5 ;). And yes, a video comparison would be nice.

Actually gingerbread was pretty good already. With ICS you get a few more functions, things like data usage monitoring. The camera app seems a little better, can do panorama. Google talk is a bit better. New cell radio, not sure if the improvement is measurable though. Oh, battery usage is about the same, so equally crappy.

sadly, ICS sucks. i'm not even talking about battery usage (don't really care about that, my phone gets charged frequently) but so many basic aspects of Android had their usability chucked out the window in ICS.

i've just had a pain in the ***** this morning dealing with the Phonebook/Contacts app on my new ICS Nexus S. BTW I've already found a bug in the phonebook! can you believe that? i'm a bit shocked, and disappointed that a non-cellphone enthusiast like me could actually find a BUG in what should be the most popular component of a smartphone OS! And Android is supposed to be the market leader?

Suggestion, leverage your google account to manage your contacts. Make sure sync contacts is on. If you ever login to any phone with your account and you do an account sync with it, all your contacts will be synced on the phone. No problems. It is the easiest way to migrate contacts.

Worst case - unlock bootloader, install 4.0.4 yakju from Google itself. Get updates from Google and not Samsung. Then you're good to go. Of course you'll get your data erased and such.
