I always heard rumors, but never really looked into it until now. This is absolutely disgusting, and cannot believe it even occurs. I have heard people in China doing the same thing though, so I definitely see the article as biased against India.
I also heard a story of people floating dead bodies away in Brampton, but cannot verify the validity behind it?

It's pretty bad in India from what I hear, but to be honest, China is no better. The article is from a Chinese ultra-nationalist website.

The incidents with corpses and stuff is a bit more isolated to the Ganges itself, due to its religious significance in Hinduism...you won't find bodies randomly floating down rivers all over India
As for the feces, garbage, etc., that's a bit more common to all the other rivers :|
I generally go to India every summer and try to avoid coming into contact with any natural or standing bodies of water (even puddles)
However, I've also been down the Yangtze in China and seen the odd dead body floating around, but probably wasn't for religious purposes

Yeah I've seen videos of it in uni. There's a pilgramage they do and I think it's to that river but basically over a million people I think migrate to bathe in the water there and it doesn't look clean.
I think water is celebrated because it's a dry place so they celebrate the monsoon rains in most parts because they only happen for part of the year and help out with agriculture. And it isn't clean but the place doesn't have sanitation in all parts nor does it have the same education outside of the elite/working classes...considering that most of the country is lower class rather than a minority and there's a tonne of industrial wastage there now...it's a huge environmental problem.
The other problem is that their gov't is not a gov't which caters to the well-being of its citizens. Well, almost no gov't does that really but over there, safety and quality of living aren't gov't ideals unless they affect a higher class. And water sanitation isn't even the best example of this. There are better examples where the gov't distritbuted a type of cheap booze (forgot what it's called, starts with an A I think), the building of dams which displace millions without compensating them or actually seeing if the dams were beneficial to them, and the testing of missles without protecting the people in the nearby towns they were tested at from radiation.
It's one of the best cases of a state answering to a certain class rather than the country in general despite being a democracy (officially).
