Police in Oakland, Calif., have surrounded a Christian university in search of a gunman who reportedly opened fire Monday morning and wounded at least five people, authorities said.

The shooting was reported shortly after 10:30 a.m. at Oikos University in east Oakland. It's unclear whether there were any fatalities.

Television news footage showed officers surrounding the building in search of the suspect, described as a Korean man in his 40s with a heavy build and wearing khaki clothing. Authorities could not confirm the suspect was still in the building. The footage also showed wounded people being carried out of the building, and more gurneys were being brought in.

"One of the people who was inside the building, she was saying there is a crazy guy inside," witness Brian Snow told KGO-TV. "She did say someone got shot in the chest right next to her before she got taken off in an ambulance."

Oakland police did not immediately return calls.

Is this happening more often or what? Poor kids shot and killed for nothing, and a nutcase on the loose or he has been arrested. What is a fourty year old doing in the building tsk..? Seems similar to Virginia Tech

These shootings were always happening. Cable news and the internet have made it more noticeable.

If only the Yanks would have paid attention to The Boomtown Rats song "I Don't Like Mondays" instead of taking it off the airwaves. Way back in 1979. It may at first glance seem to be glorifying a school shooting, but in reality it was a comment on America's stupid gun culture where any loser with a gun can kill multiple innocent victims. The rest of the world sees the problem, it's so glaringly obvious, but the Yanks somehow remain oblivious to it. How many lives could they save just by removing the guns from the streets? And to make things worse, their guns are now finding their way across the border to OUR streets. Time to put an end to the insanity. It's already been far too long.

He probably looks like the actors on the "reimagined" Hawaii 5-0. Are Kim and Park supposed to be playing Hawaiians, Chinese, or Koreans on that show? I really can't tell. They're obviously Korean to anybody with the slightest intelligence and knowledge of ethnicity though.

Update: 7 killed + 3 wounded
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2012/04/02/us-oakland-school-shooting.html

So, apparently this is a university that was founded by a Korean Pastor. My guess is that the majority of students are also Korean/Korean-American.

RIP

Sure, if it were a young kid opening fire on the general public, it would be an "occupy protester" on a rampage.

If it's an older guy opening fire on youth, it's just some crazy guy.

Even criminals and ex-cons? How about the insane?
Do you mean forced to have a gun?

I think there is already a large group of people promoting that everyone should have a gun or at least the right to.

If you live in an area where there are Asians, just chat with them when you get the chance. You'll soon recognise which is which. It's possible Northern Chinese are like Koreans, and Taiwanese are probably like Southern Chinese (I've not met either to know for sure) but the other groupings do have their distinctive characteristics. Mostly it comes down to cheekbones, eye shape, and the proportions of the face. There are probably a lot more variations under the label "Chinese" though, due to the vast population and geography involved. Tibetans, Viets, Mongols, etc, all have their own distinctive characteristics too. They're all recognisably East Asian, but were clearly separated enough by geographical barriers that distinctive features emerged in each region.

+1 for one of the five most racist countries in the world

This has got to be a joke. Of all the white majority countries america is the least racist and only one that takes any steps to redress racial injustice on a national level. The Democrat party who represented southern racist whites could bring in affirmative action, a policy that not even Canadian liberals would try to bring in not then nor now. America is about 60 years ahead of America on race relations. Just because Canadians do not open speak about race doesn't mean we are better. It means we are worst because when discrimination is not discussed.
