Importers should be personally liabel for importing dangerous products. Especially from China. There should be a law that if an importer brings in tainted canned products from China that the consumer should be able to sue the importer and then the Government should impose a mandatory fine as well.

It's bad enough these importers export Canadian jobs every day. But when they bring in something dangerous after not doing enough research on the product they should pay. Importers should be responsible to research and test the products they bring in.

I agree with the OP except for the "especially from China" part....what difference does it make?

Good point. I mentioned China because they seem to get all the media attention. However, that doesn't mean that it isn't skewed by the media.

Another Dearsummer Thread? Everything is we use here is made in China.
I hope OP is questioning companies like Sears, CT, FS/BB and thousand other goods.

Good point. This should be for all countries. The Canadian government can't keep track of every product manufacturer in the world. The onus should be on the importer to pay for the damages when they bring in something dangerous. Why should these importers that do nothing but file some papers and then make the big bucks for scalping goods from other countries?

I thought Republicans from US and Conservatives here question about such dangerous goods...From China. They even have treat China as new cold war front.
But I didn't know NDPer here on RFD, suddenly became aware China and Chinese products are Threat to Canada...Or US.

But I dont have problem somebody going both ways. They are free to whatever they like.

Anybody has proof of any unlawful activities should notify RCMP.

Strange...the article you linked doesn't even mention China or "tainted canned products from China."

Interesting thread. Are Canadian manufacturers, who have full product liability, at a competitive disadvantage to their Chinese counterparts who, through thinly capitalized importer firms, essentially don't have product liability?

I've been tempted over the years to buy various knock-off electronics off of eBay, from Chinese vendors. If I buy a genuine Dell part, my insurance company gets to sue Dell if their electronics burn down the house. If I buy a Chinese knock-off, its likely that nobody can be sued for product negligence.

13000000 items come to Canada. There is no way for the government to screen for safety. There should be strict penalties and possible jail time for those that import dangerous things.
