I thought pilots have extensive training....

he only said sorry to the houses? how about the jet? the jet is probably worth more than all those houses combined

Some humility from a public servant.

Too bad Obama, Clinton, and Bush won't apologize for destroying the US economy.

It's the jet that failed, likely due to mechanical malfunction or a bird strike. The pilot actually appears to have done all he possibly could. By the sound of things he bailed out so close to impact that the cockpit canopy landed just yards away from where he did. He (and the trainee/instructor pilot) literally ejected at the very last second.

Surprised it took this long for this to be posted here. Anyway, so far no fatalities have been reported. Hopefully it will remain that way.

BTW, what a nice thing to see young people helping the firemen with their hoses. So much better than the drunken yobs we've seen on our own streets recently, in London, ON and Vancouver. Have we really become less classy than the Yanks? It's starting to look that way.

Congrats to the authorities there. They performed a simulation of just such an accident this past December:

http://hamptonroads.com/2011/12/oceana-chesapeake-virginia-beach-train-responders

We can only hope that our own emergency crews are as well prepared. Especially since our Air Force fly exactly the same jet.

Speaking of which, we probably should have considered its successor, the Super Hornet, rather than jmping straight onto the F-35 bandwagon. Does a single-engine stealth fighter really meet Canada's needs? I doubt it. When the CF-18 was ordered a key factor was the safety of having two engines while flying over our frozen North. The geography hasn't changed, so why is a single engine now considered okay? If we must go stealth, buy the two-engined F-22 instead. It must be a lot better - the US won't let anybody else buy it.

The pilot is probably a few centimeters shorter after ejecting off the plane.

Typical american attitude. Rather than blaming himself, he says sorry for the houses. Pilots should be like captains of a ship, he should go down with the plane!

When we (Canadians), commanded the airstrikes in Libya and "accidentally" killed civilians, I didn't hear us apologize for anything.

Guess it's not a typical American attitude.

Will you be happy when they stay out of ours? We'd have to spend a lot more on defence if we didn't have the US covering our backs.

Not that this has anything to do with this thread anyway.

What wars and with whom are we having those wars?

What wars and with whom are we having those wars?

We have an extremely long, mostly unguarded coastline. What would we do if another country landed troops and claimed some of our Arctic islands? Denmark for example. Or Russia. We'd be wanting American help then, wouldn't we?

Anyway, as I said before, this has absolutely NOTHING to do with this thread's topic.

It sounds like the pilot did exactly that, to the best of his abilities. But he was smart enough to eject at the last moment, rather than blowing millions of dollars already invested in his and the other pilot's training. Nobody would have benefitted from their unnecessary deaths.

Ignorant? The US was reluctant to get involved in Libya and was criticized for it. We agreed to get involved before the US did, but as usual, the typical Canadian/CT response is that we followed the US into this war or this war was initiated by the US.

And yes, a Canadian was in charge of commanding air attacks in Libya when civilians were killed.

We played an active role in liberating a country from a mad terrorist-supporting tyrant, with no expectation of anything in return. I can see absolutely nothing wrong in that. Especially seeing as we kept collateral damage to an absolute minimum.

What does this have to do with the topic at hand?

Also your definition of public servant is off, thus making your entire post asinine.

A civil servant or public servant is a person in the public sector employed for a government department or agency. The term explicitly excludes the armed services, although civilian officials can work at "Defence Ministry" headquarters.

And Canadians will gladly take credit.. at the same time, we'll look at any bad points of the same war and blame it on the US, like the killing of civilians.

Canadians blaming everyone else but themselves? Unheard of.

Funny you say this because US is one of the countries who are "interested" in our Arctic islands. You expect them to "protect" us?

Yes, I do. I don't see the US invading us. It wouldn't shock me though if some other country would love to take some of our land, but they know the US wouldn't allow it. Like it or not, the US is our closest ally, and they would get protect us if the need arises.

They already own our governments. No need for them to invade us. But even if they did, what would happen, what would be the result? We'd all move to Hawaii, that's what! :D (Well I would anyway. The rest of you can have Florida, Arizona, and Cali).

Notice how the Cold War ended and previously unthinkable smaller wars broke out, including in Europe? And how when wars end the violent criminals get more active? It seems to be human nature. There'll always be some sort of threat, regardless of what's done. Perverse as it seems, most people slept better at night and felt more secure when the world was a button press away from complete destruction. At least then things were more predictable. Everybody knew it would be insane to upset the balance.
