Iphone 3gs has gone out of commission, what are my options?

I got a lot of mileage out of it (3 years) and I'm tied to Rogers on a contract. I have HUP available but I was hoping to use it for the iphone 5. Unfortunately the timing couldn't be worse so what are my options?

1. HUP for iphone 4s? I don't have data so will i be required to get data if i get the 4s? I'm happy with my current voice plan as it is.

2. Will rogers provide say a refurbished 3gs or the like and i can continue with my normal plan by simply inserting my old sim card?

3. My main concern is losing all my contacts on my broken 3gs so best option would be to get a crap phone and transfer my contact list and use that phone until iphone 5 is released? Is this possible?

Have you saved all your contacts basic info into your SIM?

All your account/relevant info are stored in your SIM card. Not the phone.

It should work, Maybe? If not then you would have to buy a regular SIM that works with any phone and they can transfer the # and everything onto the eligible SIM for your dumbphone or whatever.

AFAIK you can't save contacts to the SIM on an iPhone.

Since you've been using the iPhone for 3 years, I assume you've been syncing with iTunes - your contacts should be backed up there. If/when you get a new iPhone, plug it in and restore it as a backup of your old phone. Everything should show up.

I'm in a similar situation. The external speaker on my 3gs has crapped out.

Went to the Apple Store. They offered a replacement 3gs for $169. I'm considering leaving the Apple ecosystem and using my HUP for an HTC One X. Not sure though.

Go and get an unlocked phone ... HTC or Samsung ... get away from Apple ... they suck!

My recommendation would be to find a cheap phone to use in the meantime.

You CAN NOT save your contacts to a SIM with an iphone. the only way to back them up is through itunes. I hope you've been doing this, or your iphone still turns on, because if not, you're probably out of luck.

Buy a cheap phone. Check out some dealers in town and see if any have a Samsung Galaxy Q or Lumia 710 used for sale. Those should go around the $200 mark most likely Use that until August/Sept/Oct/whenever the ip5 comes out then upgrade then.

I wouldn't waste my upgrade on an ip4s if I were you, wait for the next major upgrade.

What happened to your 3GS? You could repair it, ifixit has tons of parts. I replaced my battery which was relatively simple.
