Don't worry the union has the best interest of the students in mind.

Where would pickets be? What entrances would be blocked?
I am trying to figure the best way to get to my exams next week, without having to deal with nincompoops who are overpaid as it is.

Just in time for exams, looks like they planned this well. YorkU really can't get a break with all the crap that occurs on campus and now they get this.

Maybe they should stop hiring so many TA's. Relying on them seems to be a death wish.

Off course they plan this Very well. And all those kids in York Voted for NDP and Support Unions must be wondering why they support these Unions and their hostage taking behavior?

Worst university in North America. They should just close it down.

Why do people keep applying to this school? They just keep ****ing over their students with these strikes, you'd think someone would recognize a pattern.

Lots of opinions, no data about what the TAs make, what their demands are or how their compensation measures up to TAs in other schools.

I will reserve judgment until I find out more.

"The union is asking for a 12-per-cent wage increase over three years, which it says is less than the recent deal for University of Toronto teaching assistants. CUPE says though the school has eased up in some areas, it still wants concessions the union views as unacceptable, like reducing the number of tenure-track promotions."

“In the meantime we urge members to come out and vote in favour of a strike mandate. We believe that a strong showing at the polls this week will help encourage the employer to take our proposed settlement seriously.”

This is why everyone should hate Unions. When the wording as above. Its legal way of Pulling Knife or Gun or hostage taking, kidnapping.

Job security for TAs? Are these people serious? Why can't they do like everyone and go out and get a job? I thought TAs were just temporary?

I'm more concerned with the never-ending 'me-too' trend. If they want the wages U of T are paying why don't they just quit and get a job at U of T?

Good News?

"The union representing York University’s contract faculty and assistants is recommending that its members accept a tentative offer the school presented earlier Thursday."

"“We’re recommending the membership accepts the offer,” union spokesman Skot Deeming told CityNews in the afternoon."

"Local 3903 had said the main issues were limited job security for contract faculty, hiring practices and income disparity between research and teaching assistants."

This strike was predicted 4 years ago when york had that 2 month long strike. their contract from back then ends now and it just so happens to sync with with the contracts of UT, Queen, Waterloo, etc.

so pretty much this year, all the Uni TA contracts are up for renegotiation.

I wish all the students best of luck.

I can't believe TAs are concered about job security. This is almost as bad as part-time shelvers at Public libraries who are concerned about job security.
